ok, just lost reverse looking at some trucks today (ironic?). it feels like it's going into reverse, but maybe, i dunno, 5% is actually doing anything. also, the converter clutch doesn't stay locked up in 3rd gear when negative pressure goes on the driveline. it stays locked up when there's any positive pressure and my foot into the throttle, but with smoothly release when i let off any little bit. it does hold lock up in 4th, and holds if i let off the throttle and keep the mystery switch "on".

yes, i am searching for similar posts too ;)

any opinions? go get a set of pressure gauges?

Possible Causes from book:

SLIPS IN REVERSE ONLY

-Read band worn

-Overdrive direct clutch worn

-Hydraulic pressure too low

-Rear servo leaking

NO REVERSE (D RANGES OK)

-Front clutch burnt

-Rear servo malfunction

-Valve body manfunction

-some the same as above

NO REVERSE (OR SLIPS IN REVERSE)

-some the same as above

-Overdrive thrust bearing failure

-Direct clutch spring collapsed/broken

Check ATF level. Check pressures. Take linkage off trans and see if you can put it reverse by moving the shift lever on the trans by hand. That ought to give you a better idea about what is wrong.

i didn't buy any pressure gauges yet. i did call mass diesel... told that it's trash (i trust scott). may get a stock rebuild, or something used til i get a new truck. feels like there's a little pressure in reverse, but very little. 4low on level ground and it will idle backwards. i was reading that the rear servo sticks and the piston breaks, but who knows until i pressure check the clutches and then into the valve body.
