My truck just completely lost reverse. If I put it in any other gear it functions properly a nd shifts fine but when I put it in reverse it doesnt feel like it's engaging and push up into the brake. I do notice a very slight change in the exhaust note when put into reverse but not near as different as it should be. Any ideas. Help please.

Do you have manual 1st? If so, likely the OD direct clutch pack or seal failed. Otherwise, rear servo or band?

Manual first seems to be fine. All gears seem to be good except reverse. Would dropping the pan or checking the pressure on any of the side port give any more definitive indication? Do you have to pull the trans to fix or replace those items.

Dropped the pan, fairly significant amount of blackish residue (very fine residue) had settled in pan. No parts, pieces, or objects in pan tho. Did I mention that this trans has only been in for a couple thousand miles and it's a billet trans and triple disc tc.

OD direct clutch pack is likely burnt up from the sounds of it. all the billet parts in the world won't help if a seal fails or something was assembled wrong.

Refresh my memory, did you buy it complete or have a local builder put it together?

bought it complete. DTT Shipped it to me along with the Torque converter, had a local mechanic install it for me. Checked all the port pressures and they were as they should be upon install. had them send me a Shift enhancer to get rid of a little 2-3 flare. Installed it and flare went away. was shifting good it seems and then all of the sudden was toast. this really sucks.

Call DTT and explain the symptoms. They may want you to runs some pressures tests but it really sounds like just and build failure or a parts failure.

Put the gear selector in "1" and drive the truck. If the truck freewheels when you let off the power, that would confirm that the low/reverse band or servo is inoperative.

Waiting to hear back from dtt. Pressure tests were good. 70 psi. In manual first, 195 psi in reverse. And I was able to blow air in the port and make the? actuator? Function . No parts, pieces or metal in pan. Just some black residue that looks like really fine black sand.

Hey cerb, if it is the direct clutches how hard is that to fix or better yet how long approximately would it take? Just trying to figure out how long I'm gonna be without my truck since I depend on it to do my job

You should not have had those black fines in there at all. That was a burned up steel\friction combo.

Bet it was the OD direct clutches in the OD section. When you loose those all the forward gears work but no reverse.

In order to fix it you will need to pull the OD section, dis-assemble it and rebuild the OD direct section. This is the one that contains the 800 psi spring for apply pressure so its not a simple thing to do in your garage unless you have a press.

Probably the best bet is to get a new OD unit shipped to you and replace it. It can be done by dropping the t-case and then the OD unit off the trans. Installing it can be tricky but can be done as long as the OD clutches is clearanced correctly. Thats the trick and needs a builder that is familiar with doing it or some very good instructions and help from DTT.

Cerb you were exactly right,(thank you agian for calling me the other day)the OD direct reverse clutches were smoked. I went down to midlothian tx on friday, James Northum at JTT (James Trans Technology) rebuilt the overdrive section for me. He got the call from DTT on wednesday evening. I talked to him shortly after that and he asked if i could be at his shop( 4 1/2 hrs from home) on friday morning. I was, he fixed it for me and i was on my way. I would highly recommend james if you want to have a complete transmission built or if you just want to upgrade. If anybody needs his number or email just pm me.
