With less than 900km (540 miles) it looks like my auto transmission has died:mad:!!!!!

Traveling along Trans Canada Highway at 110 km/her (66miles) Herad a clang of metal and transmission skipped briefly and rpms incresed by 300 for about 2 seconds... . then heard a vibration in the drive train as if the universal had let go. Checked the driveshaft and universals... all was fine and tight. The nearest dealer was less than a mile away and I nursed my baby into the parking lot... turned the eyes of prospective buyers who were amazed by the low noise level. They were not to impressed to hear the problem I had just encountered.

Called my purchase dealer who is going to foot the bill for a rental... . from day one the truck shifted abruptly into drive from nuetral... . obviously the transmission was sick from date of conception.

Needless to say my 3 hour drive home to my residence in a mini-van was like attending a furneral :( but hopefully the baby will be better next week).

With earlier years 47RE trannys... . was there a similar MO prior to transmission failure?

Your thoughts, comments sympathies and suggestions would be graetly appreciated.

A not so proud rammer

sorry to hear about your transmission, but is bound to happen. Some

get 540, some get 150,000. Tell your dealer take it back and give you one with 5 spd

Greetings,

Wow that is a real short time for a failure:( . What should be really fun is when the dealer goes into the 03' tech manual and finds no information on the 47RE transmission:eek:  . I would force the issue of getting a NEW transmission instead of trying to rebuild what is left of yours.

Very Sorry to Hear That!

I am also all the more confused about my next purchase. My '95 12v dually has served well but I am shopping. I drove another duramax today (yes, a traitor!) but want to be smitten by Dodge again. I am having a hard time being amazed by the 03, especially here in Maine where we have a ridiculous emission standard for diesels that prohibits the HO.

All the best to you. I think they should give you a new truck. A transmission failure at that mileage is inexcusable.

I thought about pushing for a new truck. . but one problem... . it will take 3 to 5 months to get built and get here. I can't go without a truck for that long... but I will press for a completely new transmission

Yeah - that should simply be a part swap. You should not even consider a rebuild on the transmission. Good luck, and sorry to hear about your hassle.

Well put... I work with the automatics every day, and they are junk. Its amzing they last as long as they do sometimes. Get a 6-speed! :D

proudrammer, sorry to hear of your troubles. ik wouldnt worry about the new trans,id worrry more that they flush out your cooler lines properly,or better yet ,replace the coolers, flush the lines. Recontamination from unclean lines is the biggest concern id have. About auto's being junk. Ive found the opposite true,id take an auto any day,in a light truck/car anyway,Clutches seem to last as long as tires anymore if your lucky, defects in them (cheapo discs/pressure plates)are the reason, not abusive driver wear. autos usually last way beyond 100K mile s,all mine have, with heavy equipment towing, and plowing. In my family we have over 10 2500 and 3500 trucks, all 4x4,Dodge,and GM's all tow,and plow commercially,we have had zero trans problems.

Boys:

From a hurtin unit... . all your comments and advice is being well received... . when their is a death or serious injury within the cummins/dodge family... we all must stick together... . hopefully not... but we never know who this bad faith may turn on next..... hopefully never... how do I appraoch DC to better our collective interests on this powertrain isssue.

United we stand... divided we fall

My advice on that would be to see what they offer first. If you approach them demanding; then they will stonewall for certain. Let them make the first offer. If they offer a rebuild, remind them that it is a new truck and you do not want a rebuilt transmission in it. The value will go South if they do.

Good luck:(

I didnt mention this, but Im 99% sure they will want it back,so he should get a new one, anytime a new model /series or something fails with such low miles, they want them back to see what happened.

Back to your original question - I don't recall anyone's 47re doing this. Not a new one. Usually it starts to slip under power or late upshifts. That is what could be called BOMBING the transmission, litterly. Mine lasted 72,400 miles. Wanted a better t/c so decided to do it all, with that mileage. That is with about 50K towing my 5er. The truck and trailer dry, 22,420. That does not count a 5X8 Wells Cargo that goes behind the 5er. There were no serious issues in the transmission when it was rebuilt. So no complaints here.

Some of the people who work on them may have seen it - but don't recall anyone posting. :)

autos

Whether new or used, whenever anyone comes to me and asks about buying a Ram or a Ford diesel with an auto, I always have the same answer, "The autos are fine but budget at least $2,000 to upgrade it or you'll hate it. If you don't want to do that then get a standard. " I love my auto, it's a pullin' beast, never lets me down, I torture it at the drag strip and it's still running the stock clutches with 143,000+ miles on it but the upgrade to make it that way costs more than what the local transmission shops charge for an entire rebuild but hey, you pay for what you want.

dan

Another one to add to list of what I love about my auto, it's never had any of it's nuts fall off :p :p

What really is too bad is that since it's a warranty issue, it would be nearly impossible I'm sure to intervene and take the opportunity while the darn thing is out to put in a decent torque convertor and line pressure kit - ending all troubles!
