While backing my 5th wheel up a rather steep grade about 1/2 throttle i noticed a lot of blue-white smoke pouring out of the exhaust. The truck has been doing this for years and i usually notice it under load when moving slow. A friend says he thinks i need rings. Could this thing need rings with only 147,000 miles on the clock or could i have another problem? You can see what i have done to the truck by my signature. I also am running about 14* btdc timing and get 27# boost.

im glad you asked this, because my truck smokes the same way untill it fully warms up it seems. i only notice it in 2-4 gear, then again when im in 5th goin 60-70mph all the smoke is being blown away out of sight anyhow.

good question, ill be curious to see whats some of the possible answers are.

Yes, mine also does this until it warms up but under load it does it even when fully warmed up like yesterday when i backed my rv in. If rings were shot i would think i would be using more oil. I usually add about 1. 5 qts of 15/40 rotella in 5000 miles.

Compressor out pipe is nice and clean. My pdr-hx 35 is only a few years old. I would think i am running enough timing. I know i lost a little low end torque after the timing advance. I can barely fit my index finger between the top of the pump and the head.

Sounds like a fuel system issue to me- either your pump isnt doing its thing internally, or worn injector tips.

How did you come to the conclusion of 14deg timing? I'd think that close to the head, you'd be farther along than that.

JGrefenstette- when it's cold, jump a wire from the pos battery terminal to the KSB solenoid. I had the same problem- my thermo switch in the manifold that powers the KSb when cold was shot. New switch cost $40; I had a toggle switch and some extra wire, so I just did that. Run from shut off solenoid, to in-cab switch, to KSB.

I had a diesel shop set my timing at 14* btdc with a timing light. I thought it was cranked closer to the head than other pumps i,ve seen that were advanced more than mine. Maybe the dealer put the pump in off one tooth when they changed it years ago under recall for the fulcrom pins breaking. Is that possible?

What injector set did you install when you sold the fairly new OEM injectors to Philip?

Are they set to pop off at the correct bar? Are they all evenly set?

Did you look for broken valve stem retainers?

I had a shop install new bosch 185 injectors ,commonly called power wagon injectors, that i bought from city diesel in Texas back when they were still cheap--they have since gone way up in price and i think people are now buying the 190,s. I did,nt check pop off pressure or anything, but they were brand new. I think i still had this smoke problem even with the stock injectors so it must not be injectors.

daniel, your saying that my ksb is not functioning? and this is the cause for the white smoke? how difficult is it to replace the solenoid? if i run a wire to it or replace it, what will the difference be? quicker warm up/less smoke?

thanks, interesting to know.
