I have a problem with my '94. It has 215,000 miles on it and has never had any engine work other than valve adjustments. The head gasket started leaking coolant to the outside of the head so I had it replaced. It had been smoking some and running rough when the engine was cold before I put it in the shop but nothing like what it is now. After the engine warms up it clears up and runs great with no smoke. Someone said it could be the injectors. If so, what should I replace them with?

I used to have a 95 and I had the same problem. On mine air was gettin into the system byway of a loose injector. But when that happened I just went with some 370 injectors and they were awesome! Try that and check the o-rings on the injector and see what that does. Hope this helps.

I assume this means timing is stock. When my timing was done it made a world of difference. It used to haze, sputter, snap & pop, belch white clouds-but its all gone now. Now only black smoke when I nail it-which is all the time.

Before jumping to injectors and timing, I would try to find out what is causing the problem (or making it worse).

If your overflow valve is stock I would replace that. Second I would service the pre-filter assembly. An old gasket on this would suck air and cause excessive smoke. Third if you haven't lately replace the fuel filter. More info here:http://dodgeram.org/support_pgs/diesel_ix.htm

Check out: http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/filter/pre-filt_clean.htm

Once you've done this then try advancing the timing to around 15 - 16* if you have stock injectors, a little more if you go with bigger injectors.

Good luck, Vaughn

Thanks guys! It'll take me a while but I'll check it out. I was looking at the 370's yesterday but wanted another opinion. It sounds like I should get them even if that's not the problem!!

Fuel Lines?

How long has it been since you replace the PITA rubber fuel lines? If they are bad, it will smoke and run rough when first started and then smooth out as the engine warms up.

crabman :)

PS -Fuel lines are $20 & starter rebuild kit $35, while 370's are $360

Use only USCG approved marine grade fuel lines.

My dad's '95 used to smoke HEAVY white smoke ( when it was brand new) during an extremely cold startup, he had taken it back to dodge probably 5 different times and finally had a small diesel shop reset the timing and it was fine, cleared up the smoke on startup. The shop said it was 4* out. I don't know which way, advanced or retarded.

Mine does everything stated above (No black smoke) and hard to start when very cold. Filled my whole yard with a cloud of white smoke when it was like 9* outside. :-laf Time for a Timing change.

Most days I had to keep it running for several seconds before it would idle on its own. It would make so much white smoke that it would fill half the walmart parking lot. The timing change amazed me. Things were getting so bad I thought the injection pump was going south. Laser Bob set my timing and I've been happy every since.
