Loud bangin in engine block

I have a 2002 5spd 2500 and on the way to work this morning I heard a little bang followed by a loud banging under the hood. I pulled over and looked under the hood to find nothing out of place.



When I started the engine again I could clearly hear the banging coming from what sounded like the bottom end of the engine blocak near the bell housing of the transmission.



I only have 11K on my truck, with no mods, and have not dogged it. Has anyone ever thrown a rod in a brand new Cummins engine?



The dealer is looking it over now.



Anyone else with similiar experience? Or better suggestion than thrown rod or piston cap?
 
Update

Just talked to the mechanics, and they said that they have to pull the engine apart and get a look at the bottom end. They think it could have been one of the oiler valves in the botton engine that could have malfunctioned which of course could have caused the problem. Which if the blown rod is the case then they will have to put a new engine into the truck.



Hopefully I will find out more tomorrow. THIS BLOWS alot. Cause the reason I bought the Dodge was for the Cummins engine and now I luck out and get the 1 turb out of a few hundred thousand. Hopefully they will get it all done CORRECTLY cause I am headed on a 5500K trip in March.
 
Sorry to here that but I think you will be ok if they get a new shortblock or better yet a whole new motor. :)
 
We had one in 97 that when we PDI'd it it was knocking. Dropped the pan and torqued the mains and one was stripped out.

It doesn't happen very often, but once in a while, dear old Cummins lays an egg. We had a brand new 5. 9 industrial in a tractor with a funny dull knock, dropped the pan, looked up and saw very clear damage to the #4 bore where some bozo had dinged it hard with a tool or chisel or somelike. Needless to say, that got a short block. Cummins :{ wanted us to bore it for oversize pistons; this was a brand spanking new engine; we said no thanks:-{}

And that is why you don't modify NOTHIN until you get a few miles on the clock to see how she will run!



Can you imagine going in with BOMBs and a rod knocking?

First of all let me say WELCOME:D



To change your "Handle" drop an E-Mail to the Admin folks with your request for a name change, if it's not already used, they will usually change it for you.



As far as you sig; click on the "user cp" button at the top of the page, then click on "edit profile", scroll down to the "sig" block enter your info, scroll down to "submit" button and ... abracadabra... . you are now the proud owner of a sig block that will appear each time you post.
 
The oil has only been changed 2 since I have had it. First time was by the dealer since they provided the first change for free.



The second change I did, after I got complete Genos Oil/Air/Fuel kit. And I put oil in it rated to what the owners manual required. I havent changed the fuel filter yet, and it doesnt look like I am going to be doing it anytime soon.



Should know more today about what they are going to do.
 
If you have thrown a rod you will usually know it,

because they tend to shoot through the side of the engine block

taking a good chunk of the pan, and cam with them.

Well, its semi official, I am getting a new engine, the number 6 piston rod has gone tits up. They havent pulled the engine apart completely. But based off the amount of metal that came out of the oil drain plug.



So the service manager is going to put in the order for a new engine and Turbo.



As far as warranty goes, I dont get to start from 0 again, my 5/100k continues where it left off!!
 
New Engine In

Well I finally got a new Long Block in from Cummins, they replaced the long block, and the turbo and bolted on my original head.



The verdict was that one of the oilers in the #5 piston failed to oil the piston, which caused the piston to grind into the block wall, the rod had not broken yet, but had seriously gouged the cylinder wall.



Now I have to break it in again.
 
Glad to hear you got it up and running. . now just another 20Kmi to get the motor to 'Settle in'. Having to put up w/bad mileage again would suck.

bad N14

In my Peterbilt, i have an N14 Cummins (which I bought new). The oil consumption was 700 -1200 miles per gal. I kept bringing it in to the Peterbilt dealer, and finally they said: bring it to Cummins. Some pencil-pusher keeps telling us to ***** around (when we call up for authorization (at Cummins)) It turned out every 2nd ring on all 6 cylinders was in upside down. Some one was angry that day evidently. I ended up with a new shortblock at 40000 miles. :mad:
 
Just becuase the rings were upside down that doesn't mean anyone was angry. I work for a major diesel engine manufacturer, and we had an incident last summer where a new worker was 'ringing' pistons. He wasn't givin enough training on the new job, so he did the same thing. There was around 80 engines that were built that way. We had to stop shipment of tractors and a few even got into the hands of the customers. We sent out new engines and replaced all of them, brought the old wones back, and rebuilt them all. It worked out well, except for the cost of doing all this... big $$$!
