I have a noise, seems to be at left rear of engine. Coulds it be a con rod or piston pin? or could it be the fuel pump, or ? any experiences?

Jim

Sounds like somewhere between a rod bearing and piston pin. Quite loud at idle, doesn't quit on slight acceleration, but stays in time with RPM'S. 130,000 miles on truck.

Likely if it's a rod or pin, you would not get very far. How long has this been happening? Injectors have been known to make this noise too.

The ticking fuel pump is one of my concerns. Is this a problem, should it be replaced? or is it normal? I can only hear it when idling so it really doesnt bother me. But since it is ticking does that mean that is going to fail soon or does it just tick because it wants to?

I heard a ticking from my truck as well, but not from the engine area. It was more under the cab and towards the back on the drivers side, kind of like a soft tick... the cause was the fuel return hose has rubbed through on the frame and the sound from the pulsing fuel was amplified on the frame. At first it wasn't leaking enough fuel to notice anywhere, then the frame was most obviously wet with fuel. Probably about 6-12 months time frame between the tick and having a wet frame.

Thanks all for your help, gcorron, you were right, # 6 injector came loose and this caused quite a noise like a knock, besides a miss. I guess the guy that put the injectors in last fall didn't tighten properly!(me)

ps Hi Marc in the city of champions!

I had a rod like noise show up on my VW Rabbit once. I just knew it was about to blow. Turned out to be a bad nozzle on one of the injectors. I loosened each line, & when I got to that one it quieted down. I think it was pumping several drops of liquid fuel into the combustion chamber instead of a fine spray. Replaced the nozzle & pintle, put it back on the injector, installed it, & it was back to normal. Really sounded bad before the fix.
