Here I am

loud "RING" sound when letting off at high boost?

Most important aftermarket gauge?

although it's my 2nd truck, I'm still pretty green... leaking fuel injectors?!

I think I've figured it out, but lemme think out loud for a second. .

turbo is a stock 200k mile HX35w12 making 35lbs of boost... just got the truck last night...

today I noticed a loud "RING" noise when letting off at high boost... not sure if it was doing it last night or not because I wasn't driving the truck as agressively, but today I'm more comfortable with how the thing drives, and I've been hot rodding it a little. :-laf

the noise isn't turbo "barking"... I know what that sounds like... I've heard it at the track a number of times. this sounds more like someone rubbing their finger around the rim of a crystal wine glass...

now, I pulled the inlet hose off the turbo and inspected the play... a little wiggle... nothing out of the ordinary, but probably a little on the loose side... zero end play. BUT... I DID notice a few aluminum specks... looks like a spark plug on a nitrous injected gasser that's experienced some detonation (molten aluminum from the piston deposting on the plug electrode) nothing major... just a few specks...

AND, I inadvertantly flicked the compressor wheel with my fingernail and heard a very familiar "RING" :rolleyes: replicated the sound a number of times... I was surprised to hear that little compressor wheel ring like a friggin' bell!!

anyhow, my theory is when letting off at high boost, the shaft is deflecting causing the compressor wheel to contact the compressor housing ever so slightly, thus producing the "RING"ing (which is pretty loud through the 5" stacks!! :eek: ) and causing the aluminum dust to deposit itself on the housing...

sounds like I need to develop a different driving style till I can afford a B1, right? :( :{

You Nailed it!

200K on a Bombed truck (As I See you are pushing fuel thru the motor to get up to 35LBS) It won't be long for this world ESPECIALY if alumi dust is present :eek:

well... I took the truck down to Majestic in Irving (I'm friends w/ the guys there)

we all looked at it, and decided that the aluminum depositing is actually just corrosion from moisture... the shaft play is within spec, and it doesn't appear to be contacting the housing... must be some wierd resonance that's occuring due to the layout of my exhaust system or something... wierd...

but... I AM saving for another turbo... need some more boost so I can slide that plate forward a little more! :cool:

Mine makes a slight ringing when I spin the shaft, cant hear it when I'm driving, though. If it checks out ok, dont worry about it. My truck makes several strange noises I havent pin pointed just yet, but it goes, and the guages all run within spec, so I just turn up the radio a bit. :D
