Oil plug and filter torque?

After Market Injectors

I have a question, I don't have alot of miles on the clock of the '03 but I have noticed that the turbo is super loud. When pulling up a hill with something to bounce the sound off of, like a rock wall or concrete wall, it is so loud I have to put the window up. I can hear it pretty much most of the time in the cab, I am just not used to hearing it all the time. This is not like my 01 so I am not sure if this is normal. The truck is pretty strong not great but good, gets great mileage so I am not sure that there is a problem, but I wanted to ask the experts. I don't have guages, yet, so I am not sure of the boost, but getting good mileage I would think that I don't have a leak or something.

Are some of them just really LOUD?

Doug,

I took the silencer ring off of my turbo, and it still isn't loud enough to really hear when passing a wall or building as you say. The thing I hear most is the exhaust which sounds much better when passing something to bounce the sound off of.

If it's that bad, I might check some intercooler hoses before they enter the intercooler. That would also cause a loss of power for sure.

David,

I hope you got my check!

So you don't hear the turbo, even without the silencer ring, wow! I saw some people are removing the ring, I can't imagine how loud it would be without the ring. Right now mine, when I row thru the gears, it sounds like an air raid siren. Not quite that loud but definately audible and under load it is about siren sounding. I did a quick check of the hoses when I did the first oil change and found nothing. But I will look again.

Doug,

I still hear the turbo, but it's just kind of a backround noise. If I have the radio on at a comfortable level, I don't really hear it. I'd say there's definately something wrong if yours is that loud.

I did get the check by the way. Thanks. Let me know how the kit works out and if you have any problems. If I left anything out of the instructions, shoot me an e-mail.

In the cab with the radio on and the windows up I don't hear it around town but if I roll the windows down I can hear it pretty well.

When pulling Floyd hill she really sings cause I can hear it bouncing off the cars I'm passing in the right lane :D

Could it be that it's summer and you have the windows down more?

I'll tell what sounds cool and is really loud,(windows down of course) drive down a road with a bunch of big trees spaced about 20 feet apart, doin about 30 and then punch it!Oo.

The high pitch whine may really bother some people, but it sure does not bother me. The louder the better and the closest I will ever get to owning a turbine-powered vehicle.

The sound doesn't bother me at all, I am just suprised and wondered if that is normal. My mostly stock 01 has a little more power than my completely stock 03. I can't even tell the 01 is a turbo except for the lag, it is completely quiet. And then I hear people taking out the silencer ring on the 3rd gens. I am all for letting the truck sing and all, but that has to be deafening. Because going up thru some of the canyons around here with the windows open you can't talk over the sound of the turbo. So with the ring out it must scare away wildlife in your path for the next 5 miles!!!

I am going to put in a boost guage to help determine what kind of numbers I am getting. Hopefully that will shed some light on my situation.

Doug, I note you are in Colorado... the high country. I used to work out of Cortez and Durango. I can remember that truck noises that I heard all the time up at altitude went away when I went do below 1000 ft ASL.

You mentioned you had an '01 so you already are familiar with the turbo at altitude??

I think since the 01 has a full exhaust system and alot more noise I just don't hear it. I am gonna have guages put in next week so I will see what I have for boost when it is screaming at me and I guess if those numbers are in line I won't worry about it.
