Another TDR member (not sure if he wants recognition) helped me out and moved my timing up to 15. 7 BTDC. I have an AFC filter and the silencer ring is still installed. My turbo whistle is not only louder, it is a little different pitch. I have driven Deezle1's truck (15. 5 and same filter) and his is not nearly as loud. Is this normal? My truck has a little over 130,000 miles and I think Johns has almost 200k

Different series of turbos make different sounds... . for the usual reasons - compressor/turbine size, pitch, boost level, intake system, exhaust system, etc.

An HY-35 off a 2001+ automatic truck sounds a lot different than a WH1C, HX-35 and so on.

The modified turbos - Piers' HX-40, HX-55 hybrid, etc... . are nothing but pure turbo whine symphonic heaven. :D

The BIG turbos are just plain insane - you'll know it when you hear 'em.

Maybe your buddy has a different series turbo than you do... . ? If he has the same turbo and all the other variables are the same..... a different sound is not really something to worry about unless one of you is experiencing some type of problem.

Guess I didn't ask the right question. My turbo whine became louder and changed pitch with the advanced timing. Is that normal?

Yes that is normal for a modified truck. It is hard to tell without a sig. from you. If you have modified your truck the amount of advance depends on the mods and the intended usage.

After removing the silencer ring and filter to fender boot, I now have two different whines... the one I crave (from the turbine) and the one from the wife who thinks it's annoying.

Oh and yes the pitch changed too. I believe it is a improvment in aif flow.

My truck is a stock 97' with only a flowmaster muffler, I have no idea why the previous owner put that on:rolleyes: But my turbo is very loud also, I can very easily get the whistle, and the rushing air sound. I love it when she talks to me.

:D Mine too. :D

Sweet music to the ears of a lover. Those that don't want to hear the turbo my amps will block out all sounds, you guys only need bigger amps.
