After this message was posted, i bought my next DEF at the dealer. I was traveling in the 2500 for almost all of June. And when we returned from our trip i had to get some warranty work done on the leaky third brakelight. In early July after returning from our June trip, i bought 2.5 gallons of mopar DEF from the dealer. I was there anyway. It was almost twice as much as the PEAK DEF, but had a much easier to read mfg date (uncoded). It had only been on the shelf 2-3 months. And since the dealer had my mileage recorded on the same day i bought my DEF, i figured i would be covered from any DEF problems for several months. Paid a bit more for peace of mind. I filled up once at a Pilot pump (2 years ago). And talking to the semi rig drivers, most of them had rigs too old to use DEF. They were surprised to see my truck needed DEF. I have since decided against the crap shoot/uncertainty that i might be dealing with at the DEF pump. Because if few of those big rigs on the hwy use DEF, maybe it's not as fresh as PEAK? Or Mopar? Too many uncertainties. I don't know if the DEF tanks are underground or if they are in a building. I don't know if the lines that the DEF travels through could be compromised. I don't know if the DEF pump proximity to the diesel pump could render it contaminated.

More and more OTR truck are using DEF. These trucks have emissions systems monitored by computers too! If the DEF was bad, the truckers would know it first. That truck stop would soon be out of business. DEF tanks were added recently, I'm not concerned by cross contamination there, the pump nozzle may be a little dirty though. Just like diesel fuel, the truckers buy in large volumes, fuel and DEF. I think it's the freshest at the pump at, say a Loves or a Flying J/Pilot.

Right on, Ken !!!! A truckstop's individual reputation / nationwide name branding could go downhill fast if the facility was ever lackadaisical in regards to either #2 fuel or DEF. The likelihood of cross contamination is .000001%-----IMO. Since some of these new rigs can run upwards of easily two to three times what our "little" RAM's cost-----I'm sure there's PLENTY of checks & balances in place. Obviously the fuel retailer has insurance (and a large deductible, I'm sure) but the retailer also has recourse with the fuel wholesaler as well. Many, many, many gallons of truckstop DEF have been ran through The Radio Flyer. ZERO emissions issues and ZERO EGR issues through 175,739 miles.

On my way to Denham Springs, LA, pulling that 40' ServPro enclosed trailer, I encountered trailer tire issues, and had a delay at the T/A in Franklin, TN along I-65. After daybreak, I snapped these pics while I was there.

Sometimes.......I think people work harder for a solution to a perceived problem that has a low frequency of occurrence than they do an actual problem----with a much higher rate of occurrence.

I've said it before---and I'll say it again : DEF = DEF = DEF = DEF.

Overpaying for DEF in a MOPAR jug doesn't make the DEF better.

Overpaying for DEF in a Peak Blue jug doesn't make the DEF better.

Overpaying for DEF in a Terra Cair jug doesn't make the DEF better.

Overpaying for DEF in a Super-Tech jug doesn't make the DEF better.

You should show this to Lightning driver.....he thinks it comes from a tote in the backroom.......:-laf

Or. I could put a quarter in to get a condom?

But on a more serious note, i appreciate your input. I just decided to spend a bit more for def after hearing about a problem with DEF at a supplier in the Atlanta area on RV.net. The pilot that i filled up at didn't give me any problems, but it was on i 75 north west of atlanta. I think where i filled with DEF was a different location than where the problem def was sourced.

I AM seeing more OTR trucks with "clean idle" stickers on them. And those are most definately the ones using DEF.

I'm glad the message that the OP posted was a false alarm. Don't wish that nightmare on anyone.

@bugout - I got that message one time when my DEF had gotten low. After I refilled it, it went out. This time I let it go until it told me 150 miles to limp mode, but I didn't get the message. Filled it up yesterday and so far, all is well.

I wouldn't wake that dog up.

I've continued to buy DEF only at bulk facilities, truck stops or cardlock locations, where I buy only what I need to fill up. Love this approach...did it today. :)
