Low airflow from vents

I know this has been discussed before but here goes.



We made a drive through the mountains today and it was not as hot as it has been, below 90 degrees but we had the air conditioner on and it was putting out the normal air flow, I know because the wife asked me to turn it down as her arms were cold. About halfway through our drive she was turning the fan on high.

Well, it made no difference.



So I played with the control in all positions dash, dash and floor and defrost

and the air flow was changing from one position to the other like it is supposed to but just not as much air movement as normal.



Any thoughts on this.



May get a chance to see if our costly extended coverage was worth the price.

Whats happening is your evaporator is freezing up. Next time it does this just turn the AC button off and let the fan run a while. You will then notice the air flow pickup as the evaporator thaws out. My 03 does this as well. Used to be a thread on the problem being a low freon charge because of a leaking crimped fitting, but I couldn't find it for you. Someone will surely find it for you.

Yep... . mines been doing that same thing, turn off the compressor and it will still blow cold while the evap thaws. Now to find that thread... ...

The freeze up is correct due to a low freon charge. My 03 and 04 did this until I recharged with one pound in the 03 and 1/2 pound in the 04 even though they were in specs on the freon pressure reading. Problem solved.

I have this same problem now on my truck. All the lines were covered in frost and what little air was coming out was not cold. Added a can of freon today and she seems better, though haven't run her all day to check her out.



Another problem I have - and not sure if this will fix it - is that my truck idles and is run off road or on back roads all day while tending gas wells, and the A/C is not real cold until I drive down the road faster. I'm thinking the problem may be that the condenser is so far out front and away from the fan that it does not get much air flow at idle. Any ideas on this? Has anyone considered installing an electric pusher fan up front?
