I just bought a 98 12V the other day. The temps here in Ohio have been in the 20s (Not THAT Cold).

Anyways, the engine temperature on my 12V "seems" to take forever to get going. The heater finally starts putting out some good heat after about 10 minutes or so.

The Coolant Temp Guage stays around 165F after sustained (10-30 miles) of Highway driving. The seems VERY low IMHO.

I know Diesels are real finniky about fuel/timing issues, but I'm guessing it "may" be in need of a new Thermostat.

Ideas ???

What you are experiencing is normal.

You need to block some of the airflow to the radiator and intercooler. It will warm up quicker stay warmer when running.

I concure with Cooker , diesels run cool anyways ,nature of the beast.

20's not that cold your crazy I start *****ing when it gets in the 50's in the morning.

At what outside temperature should one start blocking off the radiator ??

What is "Normal" Coolant operating temperature under "normal" conditions ??

If you don't tow anything you might try removing the fan. If you decide to leave it on and block the rad don't forget to cut a hole in the center for the fan clutch. I have also read that uneven air flow will cause the fan blades to flex and fail.
