Well I found out today that my low fuel light doesn't work, the hard way. :( I posted the thread about fuel capacity last week because my fuel gauge doesn't work either and I didn't know how much fuel my truck held. I figured I'd wait until the trip got to about 550 and fuel up, but the truck died at 538. Lucky for me it happen right in front of a Conoco. :D I tried to prime it but that didn't work so I cracked the fuel lines at the injectors and bled the air out and she started right up. Just thought I would share my little incident with yall. By the way, how many miles to most of yall get on a tank of fuel?

The fuel tank on my truck holds 30 US gals.

City driving I can drive between 525-550 miles.

Highway driving I can drive between 625-650 miles.

Fuel Mileage

I can usually get between 500 to 550 maybe a tad more but that's pushing it and is mostly highway cruising. Used to get a little better. Maybe it's the original injectors, they could be on their way out at 258,000

My low fuel light comes on about 1/8 tank and doesn't leave much room for error :(

Glad you got it going no problem.

Low fuel light

The low fuel light is run off a small board on the back of the message center. All it does is measure the voltage coming from the same fuel level sender that the guage uses. When the voltage gets to the critical point, the light illuminates. Since both the guage and light don't work, it sounds like a problem in the sender or the wires to it. Not CTD experience talking here, just my old electronics troubleshooting days.

BTW. I thought the oil pressure dummy light and guage worked the same way. I was wrong. The oil pressure sender actually has two outputs, one for the guage and one for the light. So much for consistency. :)

Be careful for the next few days! It seems that you used up your weekly dose of good luck running out of fuel at the station. :-laf

I didn't even know these things HAD a low fuel light..... Owned the truck and been a member here for 4 years, and I'm still learning stuff :) I've probably said it before, but I love this place, best $35 I spend every year.

Even with totally wasted fuel level sending unit, the LOW FUEL light came on and when I filled up, it would take 23 gallons. I replaced the level sending unit and now the LOW FUEL light comes on at 24. 5 gallons.
