I was talking to a buddy the other day and found out he had 70,000 miles on his truck. Can't remember if it is an '04, or '04. 5, but it is newer than my '03. He asked how many miles on mine, and I had to go verify it, but I only have 19,760 miles on my '03. About half of those miles are accumulated by pulling a 16K fiver (25,500 gross) to new contract locations, then used to commute to work and back to the trailer for the other half. At this rate, I'll never get the engine broke in!
Whenever we "road trip", we usually take the Tundra. Better mileage, cheaper fuel, and fewer tires to wear out.

I guess my question is am I hurting my truck? Am I decreasing the life-span? I was planning on this being the last big truck I own for a long time.

Thanks for your input.
Steve

If you have that many miles on your 03, its already well broken in. Hauling that trailer was the best part in breaking in.

Chuck

You already broke the engine in by towing that much weight. You got what you wished for. The truck will last forever just remember to change the engine oil and filter at 6 months if you use petroleum based and 12 months if you use synthetic irregardless of low miles.

I put about 12k on my truck / year. I'm 55 years old, so I'll have to live to 135 years to see 1M miles on it. I'm very optomistic.

Shoot I'm 30 and have had my truck 8 months and it's only got 6k on it, with about 5k of that towing my 5th wheel and 3k being one trip.

My truck will sit for almost a month at a time or so and then I'll work it pulling my trailer. Sometimes feels kinda silly I basicly pay 600 (my note) to use it one weekend a month (more during football season). Hopefully this truck lasts me 10+ years and I'll keep it till I get sick of it which may be 20+ years. . Unless some rich uncle dies and I can get the rumored 5500...

No problems yet with the battery but thinking of putting a battery tender on it. Should I attach it to one battery, split the cord and attach it to both or buy 2 tenders :(

sorry to hijack this post a little

Darn it I am 52 and only have 475,000 miles on it, hope to get to . 5M here before the end of the year! I fly mostly now... was doing oil changes about every 5 weeks... last one lasted almost 5 months.

My '99 has a whopping 52,000 miles on it. New shortblock(another 53,thanks D/C!) @ 17,500miles. You do the math. Aside from another cracked block, should outlive me.

2 years in 2 months. I'll prolly have close to 65000 to 70,000 mostly unloaded miles.

Can't figured out how to spend $650/month for a truck that I would use once a blue moon.

Im embarassed to admit it but I just hit 12,300 (Yes! 12 thousand!!) :) on my 02'!! Maybe half towing fiver. Between co. truck and parking in a pkg. garage, not as much oppurtunity to drive as I would like! To make it worse,I made the mistake of looking at new ones the other day. The kind salesman was willing to give me "excellent KBB trade-in value! What a guy!,I think it was 20k and change!

still young...........

I have had my 2004 1T truck since March 2004. I had it serviced a couple weeks ago... 10,100+ miles on it. The 2002 3/4T I traded for the 2004 had 7800 miles on it. The ashtray is dirty again... ... ... ... ... .

So, these trucks for those who posted here with incredibly low millage for a 2 year old truck, Just and excuse for a truck because of "WHAT"?

1. wanted it cuz you have that extra money?

2. travel trailer?

3 ???

If it's #2, ever weight in the cost of a rental truck for the few times you tow that trailer vs the costs of 2 years worth of payments?

none of those reasons............

Jason,

You asked, "If it's #2, ever weight in the cost of a rental truck for the few times you tow that trailer vs the costs of 2 years worth of payments?"

I traded because I felt the safety of me, mine and those on the road required that I tow safely. The 3/4T wasn't up ot the job so I bought a 1T. It is different and makes me feel much better knowing I am now drving safely and towing safely. So maybe the little joke about the ashtray upset you, but I don't worry about wearing parts out or breaking down while travelling. THAT made the trade worth it. Try renting any vehicle that you are comfortable in for a vacation or travel. If it is someone elses you wont feel near the enjoyment as driving your own. As least I am getting more miles on this one.

nothing upset me here. It's not my money your spending. Infact it's good for DCX to see that your buying new trucks, brings the price of my next truck down just that little bit more.

I understand the jump from 3/4 to 1ton, that's understandable. But some folks on here really don't drive that much even with their 7 year old truck! :). Something I don't get when you invest $650/month or more in something and never really use it.

And as for the rental thing, Yeah, I'm sure the confort thing is a personal preference, But It's not like your driving it everyday 50 miles at a time.

To each their own I suppose.

#2 for me. Oh and because I wanted it and the only payment I have on it is the insurance premium. I drive my Jeep for work to keep the miles off my truck because the plan, at least at this point, is to keep the truck a LOOONG time. It's two years old and we still have a new truck. That's pretty cool too.

One of these day... . Soon, like in 25 years I'll get my Corvette or Porche or BMW M3, or one of each! Just becuase I want it :)

I suppose I need to buy that house first, get salary to the 6 figure range and that pesky retirment fund on it's way before I can seriouly think about my "just cuz I want it".

Assuming no kids pop into the future, that 25 years should be lowered to about 10 years.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I guess I am not so weird after all.

Jason..... I have a CTD 3500 because we are full-timers. We live in a 38' fiver. Although we are full-timers, we are not retired yet. We are traveling medical people. I do X-Rays and CAT Scans, and my wife works in the Operating Room. Our agencies find hospitals for us that need temporary help. A typical contract lasts 13 weeks. At the end of 13 weeks, we can either renew for another 13, or move on to somewhere else. Sometimes, the next contract is just over the hill to the next town, but we have pulled as far as 1800 miles for a contract also. The CTD gets our "house" from contract to contract, then the CTD gets me from the "house" to the hospital.
