Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) low oil pressure

I have a totaly stock 97 4x4 135,000 mi. well cared for and last night I noticed that the oil pressure gauge showing in the red right at 0 psi. so I let off the throttle to pull over and check things out and the gauge shot up to 40psi. so I put the truck in neutral and pressed the throttle slowly and at about 1475 the pressure starts to drop off, and at 1500 rpm the pressure shows 0.

Any ideas I am full of oil, maybe a bad sender.

Almost guaranteed to be the sensor. Mine's been doing that of late, but only when it's warm/hot. This's the third sensor I've had in the truck in 235K miles.

The oil pressure sensor (sender) do have the habit of going bad and they do weird things when they go.

Mine did that, I changed out the sender, but it still does it on occasion.

I'm idling at about 600 RPM's, and I think that's why.

If I start out on a hill it does it.

BTW, parts stores seem to want $330 for the sensor, if they can get it. Dunno what dealers want, but it's sure to be expensive.

I just bought one from Cummins Atlantic for $33, plus $15 overnight charge. They've sold exactly two of them ever, today and in 2001, to me. Now I gotta find a socket or wrench to effect the install!

Could you please post Cummins part number? I stopped at my local Cummins dealer today to inquire about one and was told that it probably a dealer item as it feeds the Dodge gauge in the dash. If you'd post part # I could go back to them and they'd order it.



By the way, I have a '98 12 valve.

Give Cummins the engine serial number and they'll surely get the right part for you. For my engine, the part # is 3932300, product code CECO. (Howver, I would expect all the oil senders to be the same model. )

The engine # is on the vehicle left side of the timing cover. There're several numbers; the one labelled 'Engine' is the one you want.
