Recently I have been concerned about my ail pressure. Cold it idles at 40 psi and runs around 45 to 50 psi off idle. kWhen the engine is good and warmed up ( after towing 24 ft travel trl. for several miles it stays at 40 psi when at working speeds and then drops to just above the normal range (low mark) I think this is probably around 25 psi. This while idleing at around 650 to 700 rpm hot. Should I be concerned or not? The truck has 93,000 on it. Thanks in advance for any info. Dave Gardner.

David,
Your oil pressure seems normal. My engine oil pressure is similar.

Your idle speed is on the low side. It should be 750-800 RPM w/transmission in drive and A/C on.

David I'm with Hemi Dart you preesure seems to be OK. Check your owners manual for minimum oil pressure, I believe its under starting engine.
Max oil pressure is 65 inside of engine. When it and if pressure goes over 65, dump valve opens, allows some oil go back to pan. This could account for the drop to 25.
My Mule is almost always at 40,but my Freightliner goes to 65 moving, 25 idle. When I first start Freinghtliner the oil pressure matches the tach until engine warms(coolant) up to 180.

Thanks for the input guys. I checked the owners manual and this appears to be normal oil press. I will check into raising my idle speed as it does seem to be low. Is this a great forum or what?

hey,dave--wanna stain yer driver's seat? #ad
while your idle is so low, put truck in gear, run A/C, crank power steering full right or full left... . this combo of offenses should get your rpm down to about 500-550... at that point, the oil pressure gets down to about 20-ish,and won't trip the sending unit----dash guage goes to "0" and the little bell goes "dingdingding" while your engine's whole life flashes before your eyes #ad
---you still have pressure and flow, but, the "pucker factor" takes its toll for the rest of the day... . rich

Does anyone know if the 24 valve oil pumps will fit in the 12 valve? They seem to have much higher pressure than the 12.

My oil pressure sending unit went all batty on me a while back. Wild swings, heart stopping drops, the whole bit. Instead of putting in a new sending unit, I plumbed a oil pressure gauge in, and mounted it under the dash. AAAHHHH! What a relief! Also figured out that the stock electronic gauge is not very accurate. When it worked, it showed a max of about 40lbs, then about 12 lbs at idle. Real numbers:

Cold, running - 75
Hot, running - 60
Cold, idle - 40
Hot, idle - 25

I just don't trust electronic oil pressure gauges, at least not factory.
