Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Lotsa smoke

I'm a pretty new diesel owner. 2 months ago I bought a 95 dodge diesel. I've been driving it for 2 months now and it seems to not have the power I was expecting. It will hardly keep 70 on the interstate and has to be going downhill to get over 75. Today when I started it and put it into drive it died. So I got out of the truck and manually turned the throttle and white to blueish white smoke would come out of the exhaust. Any ideas on what it could be.

Thanks

Eric

Eric, try www.dieselpage.com and click on Tech Info and Install Guide. You will find a lot of general info that will give insight to several areas of diesel concerns. Low power and white smoke are addressed.

Check your lift pump... . bad fuel pressure would cause this... as would a small air leak in the fuel system. The feed/return lines on this truck (since it's a '95) probably have more cracks than a Massachusetts highway!

Check for obstructions in the intake too... . bad air filter, etc. I've personally seen a truck with a rag stuck in the grid heater that ran like dog poo..... rightfully so!!

I had the same problem hauling a large load. Turned out the timing had slipped and the pre fuel filter screen was clogged almost solid. I think the Cummins shop did the timing first and still had low power, then figured out the screen was clogged. I thought it could of been just the screen. JM. 02
