I found it tonight. I pulled the hose that feeds from the "T" going over to the wastegate actuator. I could blow through it. I found that the actuator was leaking. I pulled the line at the actuator and could not blow through it. Anyone know the process for changing this device that runs the wastegate and where to buy it?

The waste gate actuator can be purchased from Cummins or the dealer. To remove it I would apply regulated air to it to remove some of the spring tension so that you can remove the E clip off the lever with out risk of bending any thing. If the diaphram wont hold any air you will have to be a little more creative.

The diaphram wont hold air. I guess I can try connecting something to my compressor line. I will get the new one today and have it ready for the swap.

I've never used air to remove an actuator and haven't had a problem, but then again I've never tried doing it with the turbo installed. Four bolts, two hoses and two clamps to get the turbo out in the open is a cheap price to pay.

I've known several people who have blown out the actuator diaphram testing with compressed air, never exceed 35 psi.

Here is another question. Since, I have been running with this actualtor bad and had low power because the pump would not deliver enough fuel but I assume max boost (I have no boost gauge). What kind of boost was I hitting at full throttle?

unitil one or two of those bolts wont come out and break off in the manifold then you try to take the manifold off to drill and tap the little critter and then break off the bolts in the head that are bent from heat expansion of the manifold :D OK, now I'm rambling :D

get yourself a crate of aerokroil and start using it for a week before you start :D just be prepared for small under hood fires if you use too much and drive it

glad to hear you found it

There was someone here a few years ago who said he was removing all the nuts and bolts on his truck one by one and putting anti-seize on them. Must have been retired...

I am not sure why you would want to remove the turbo to change the actuator,2 nuts and an e clip and it is off. I don't have the part # here at home but if you call cummins with your cpl and they may also ask for your engine serial # (both found on your data plate)they will find it easy enough.

Bob

I second what bob4x4 says about just giving Cummins the engine serial number. They can find it, most likely they will ask for the serial number. Allways have asked me when looking for small odds and ends.

Not more than about 32-34 psi on a stock motor, I would speculate. That's what mine did at 5500' elevation with just an AFC tweak, 3-1/2" exhaust, and a K&N. I had my wastegate blocked closed and I do have the smaller 1st gen aftercooler, don't know if that increases or decreases pressure.

Seems to me that if you had a major leak at the actuator, you wouldn't make as much boost, though. Your volume would still be high, but you would be losing psi (and some of the volume) at the leak, depending on how bad the leak was. For a temp fix, you could pinch off the line to the actuator, but without a boost and/or egt gauge, I think you might be getting in the danger zones without knowing it.

PW, if you have a Banks installer close by give them a call. Many times when folks have the Banks housing installed they leave the stock housing with wastegate at the installer's. When I lived in WA my buddy who was a Banks installer had a pallet full of them...

I pu a boost gauge on tonight. Without pulling a load on an empty truck I cant get over 30PSI. Do I even need th waste gate given I read guys with 40+ PSI?

You're probably ok but the only way you'll ever see your max boost is to load it up on a steep hill. 36 psi is about the most you want to see, any more and all you get is higher egts.

PWeber,

When I first put in my cam plate I just plugged the waste gate line & the highest I ever saw was 27 lbs. Then I put a 16 cfm housing on & it didn't even have a waste gate and 25 was the highest I ever saw with it.

If I were you I'd just plug the line & don't worry about it. If anything you'll run cooler EGT's.
