Archived Lower Radiator Hose Spring?

I'm in the middle of changing out all hoses, thermostat and waterpump. Thermostat and waterpump was no problem. The replacement lower radiator hose has no spring. I've always known the lower hose to have a spring. Is the spring really important? Should I return the hose and buy one with a spring inside? Thanks...

The spring is there to reinforce the hose since it is the suction hose. At high rpms, the engine can suck the hose shut and prevent coolant flow. Your replacement hose may be made out of stiffer material in order to prevent that. You would probably be alright with that hose but I would look for a replacement with the spring. Just my . 02.

If the old one had a spring, could it be reused?

Assuming it's not rusty, broken, corroded, etc. of course.

If the old one looks somewhat pleased with its existence here on Earth... . I would reuse it. So long as it isn't all corroded and so forth... .



You might have to use a little "Kentucky Windage" to get that sucker out of there and into the new one... . they can be a real pain in the bottom.

Some of the new "modern" hose has a spiral of some sort of stiff plastic inside the rubber of the hose instead of a spring. If you can't squeeze the hose shut with your hand use it.

I just bought a new lower radiator hose from Dodge and it has the spring. 1998. 5 24V
