I have read many times that someone replaced a lift pump and then had trouble starting the truck. I just added a factory lift pump as a pusher pump. It REFUSED to take a prime and move fuel! Fortunatly, I did not try to start the truck or I would have had to bleed out the air to get the motor running again!

I solved the problem by removing the inlet hose and squirting some motor oil into the inlet of the pump. Put things back together and everything worked fine! From now on, shooting a little oil into the pump before instalation will be standard procedure for me!!!

Hope this saves someone some grief.

I think diesel would probably work fine too. I think the main thing is to get something in the pump to help the impeller seal and start moving the fuel. I used oil for two reasons. First, I had run the pump long enough to make me nervous and I wanted some LUBE inside it! The other is that my pump can was the easiest thing to use with the LP installed... it was full of motor oil.

Main point is, do not install the pump dry! It may not pump!!!
