The sticker on my truck says it has a limited slip differential. The previous owner says he burned up and replaced the rear end about 50K miles ago. Says he paid about $1800 for the new rear. I noticed my truck doesn't do very well on dirt. It'll dig a rut into the ground - with one tire only. Anybody know how to check to see if the replacement rear end is still a limited slip?

THANKS

Jack up both rear tires off the ground. Turn one wheel and if the other side turns the same way it's got LSD if it turns the other way it's an open diff.

Another way to check is to pull the rear diff cover of (you should change the fluid, anyway), and look at the carrier. If it is squared off at the other end from the ring gear, it is a LSD. If it rounds off away from the ring gear, it is open.
