If I remember correctly John Holmes (TDR staff writer) used to run these on his Ram. He was running 255/85R16 D Kelly/Springfield Safari AWRs. I also believe I read that Joe Donnely (frequent TDR BB poster) runs this tire size as well.

I am on my n-th set of Cooper Discoverer LT tires in this size. Work well in dirt, rocks, pavement, dry or wet, snow. Not the best deep mud tire, of course. Pretty quiet. Tire life is a compromise--harder rubber gives less traction and lasts longer. These tires have moderate rubber compound, give pretty good mileage, probably 40K or so if you wear them out and drive primarily highways (I change before then, and mileage for me is less in city driving, etc. ). They are D rated which is 3000 lb in this size. Cooper is the tallest and narrowest of the 255's I have found. I wanted the pumpkin cleearance for trails, and narrow is good in deep snow. Width is about like the stock 245 tires. Loaded radius is about 15. 3"

I ran Dunlop Radial Rovers 255/85R16`s till they wore out. Loved them. Consumer Reports ranked them #1 for light truck tires.

I've got the Kelly Safari MSR tires in that size. They are Kelly's most agressive tread. I've not had them long enough to know how long they'll last. They seem to go through snow , mud, and sand so far. I don't think they're noisy.
That size did drop my gearing to 3:23 or something, so I can't get up some hills in overdrive anymore.

I put Wild Country, sold through Les Schwab dealers through out most of the Northwest. Load Range 'D'. Seems like they were around $130 each. I had BF Goodrich Mud Terrains on my Chev and liked them, very good mud tire. The Wild Country are more of a all terrain tire but they had other more aggresive treads in other brands. I have not seen any 255's above load range 'D'. They sure look better on the truck than the stock 245's. Makes the truck sit a little higher and makes the speedo off about 10%.

Dee,

I'm using the Dunlop Rover RV in 255/85/16, load range D (same 3000lb load rating as 245/75/16 E). I wanted a more aggressive tread for off-road and am very pleased with these tires. $110 each at Discount tire. They drive well on the highway, can't hear them over the sound of the Cummins and they are wearing well. Only catch is they have more sidewall flex, being a taller tire, and the truck doesn't feel as secure in the corners, but I didn't buy the truck to slalom down the canyons.

I'll probably be seeing you up at the range, so you can check them out.

John

Welcome on board John. Isn't this a great thing!!! Come on up this saturday, we'll have lots of fun.

I am running Kelly Safari in that size. Have them on for about 3,000 miles. Was running Dunlop RV Rover in 255/85R16. Got 45,000 miles on them before replacing. The Kelly Safari's give a smoother ride with less tire noise than the Dunlops. I do notice a little more "roll" when taking highway off ramps at high speed. All in all, so far I prefer the Kelly Safaris.

I measured the tread depth on my Kelly MSR's this week. I am down to about 10 mm. from an originally 14 mm. I'm guesstimating about 25K lifespan at this rate. Not real great, but in my experience about average for a fairly aggressive type tread on a 7800 lb. vehicle.

I've been looking at 255/85/16s and found some Michelin tires for about $111 at Costco (membership). They are load range E! I hope to raise my gearing by doing this. Currently 4. 10 with 235/85/16.

92 4wd 5sp 4. 10 the rest is stock.

If you guys like the looks and benefits of the taller tires you should try the 305/70/16. I am a tech in a tire dealership and we have sold lots of these on 4x4 rams, and the customers just love them. They are Goodyear ATS,a little knoby looking but very quit on the highway.

Did you get the Michelins? What tire is it? I can't find Michelins in 255/85 anywhere.

see signature... the Dunlaps run great in the rain, have a not-to-boisterous sound on the highway, and are wearing better than the stock Goodyears I had before (should get at least 40K out of these tires). Actual diameter of tire 33. 6 inches new... added 1. 5 inches actual ground clearance, improved my mpg, and filled the wheelwells up while keeping the stock 16x6. 5s... all for $130/tire w/mounting, balance, and lifetime rotation (local tire store). Go for it!!
