Hey Gang, Years ago i use to add motor oil to the diesel fuel in my Mercedes and i never had a pump problem. I was wondering what you guy's think about adding 5 Percent 2 Cycle Motor oil to the diesel fuel???Would that Lubricate the fuel and there by the whole system? Has anyone tried this? ?????

riflesmith has information that recommends a concentration of 0. 5% 2-cycle motor oil.

Do it if it makes you feel good otherwise there is no benefit on a 12 valve unless you live in the far north and have a high percentage of #1 in your winter fuel.

HUH?

You wanna put as much as *1. 5 GALLONS* of oil in each tank of diesel fuel?

Surely you jest... . ;) :D

I have called Cummins on this and they state that a 5% mixture is OK. If you want to get technical Gary, you put oil into your fuel tank every time you fill up. Adding oil to oil isnt a problem.

OH, I'm sure it can be done alright - and other than increased buildup of carbon (yeah, even with 2-stroke oil!), and the additional smoke (just think how much a GAS engine will smoke when the engine is worn, and it burns a quart of oil every 100 miles!)

BUT, the added EXPENSE! How much will 1. 5 gallons of decent 2-stroke oil COST every tankfull?

NAHHHhh - ya CAN'T be serious... :p ;) :D

Even if its OK, seems strange to me. I personally will stick with diesel fuel conditioners like stanadyne, Power Serivce, howes, etc. every tank.

easy there Tiger, only the bottom end is lubed by oil. the top end needs the fuel to carry the lubrication. with that said... . I still think to the economics of two stroke oil is not quite there yet. at $25 for a gallon of Klotz. its not worth it.

239,000 miles and still going tells me i'm on the right path :D

I've been using RP two Cycle oil at 6 oz per 30 gallons. It's ashless so it does not leave any deposits when injected and increases the lubricity of the diesel. It does not increase cetane.

At this ratio, it adds alittle less than 0. 05 $ per gallon of fuel.

Pump and injectors run quieter and I did see a slight increase in fuel mileage.

Not all two cycle engine oils are created equal so I do not know how others would work.

Is the book wrong?

The use of diesel fuel additive to increase fuel lubricity is not required or recommended.
1995 Service Manual.

If it makes you feel better, add the additives. I'd rather squirrel away that money for my next bomb. ;)

The stuff you are trying to lube has tolerances in the millionths of an inch. I wouldn't use motor oil, which by the way will mess up your catalytic converter too.

Clean, water-free fuel is the most important maintenance.

Well over 100,000 miles on generic #2 diesel fuel only.

I'd imagine that "Howes lubercator" would lube the pump decently. It's not too expensive, and even though I have pretty bad hearing loss, I believe it ran quieter.

The exhaust smelt pretty good too.

WRONG ENGINE

I made a mistake ,I wanted to know how you felt about a 6 oz bottle of 2cycle oil added to a 24 V Engine... . Sorry I blew it...

12 valve or 24 valve, the fuel still flows through the injectors and is pressurized by the injection pump. Everything still applies.

Even your old Mercedes did not need oil added to the fuel. They have an oil level hole on the side of the pump. Use motor oil in the pump.

add lubricity additives to fuel

I have added 8 ozs of power service to every tankful of fuel have 185k with no fuel related problems. After the Govt. took the lubricity out of fuel I felt this would prevent any expensive problems. I classify the Govt. messing with Diesel in the same barrel as the 1. 6 toilet.

FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE!

I have been adding up to 5% filtered USED motor oil to my fuel for years! I have done it for nearly 300,000 miles on my '92. Makes more smoke, but runs better and gives better fuel economy. I did my first injection rebuild at 248,000 miles!

I have been adding 5% to my 2001. 5 since it had only 100 miles on it. You CAN'T make that thing smoke!!! Only 20k on it now. Will see what happens long term. I can give filter and oil type recomendations if interested.

I spend most of my time 700 miles south of the boarder in Mexico. Fuel here costs around $2. 00 per gallon. Where else can you get $2 per gallon for used motor oil!!! This is FREE FUEL!

I also have to think that with lift pump problems, etc. a little lube in the fuel just might save an injection pump some day. Can't hurt the lift pump either!

Every time I change my oil I burn a gallon of the used stuff per tank of fuel until I use it all up. It's nice to not have to haul pails of messy used oil to the recyclers and risk making a grand mess in my truck!

Like on Keimmmo's rig a gallon of oil in the tank doesn't cause any increase in smoke at all on my rig. With direct injection and high cylinder pressures in a diesel engine, the oil burns instantly like fuel. Cylinder temps are well above the flash point of oil at the moment of injection.
