Zerex G-05 Anti-freeze Information

According to the spec sheet, this oil doesn't have a very high "VISCOSITY INDEX" meaning it will vary in viscosity over the operating temperature range more than an oil with a higher VI INDEX. The best oils with the highest VI will remain stable and not vary much in viscosity over the temperature range. This allows for consistent engine performance within the normal working conditions.

131 isn't very high? Anything over 110 is considered VERY high. The other nice thing is it is CI formula.

Looking at Amsoil site the better Amsoil 15W-40 has a VI of 146, a little better but not drastic, but it only has a TBN of 10. 4. I don't want to get onto a AMSOIL fight, it is good oil, but it is not the only oil. You have to admit, as far as non synthetic oils go, it's not bad, and better than almost all of the CJ formulas out there.

Since we're now running ultra low sulfur diesel, why exactly do you want a very high TBN oil? These typically are marine diesel oils where bunker fuels are used. Combustion acid buildup isn't nearly the problem that it used to be with standard or low (500 ppm) sulfur diesel.

Anyone ever ran Schaefer Oil?, Probably spelled it wrong, was wondering , i just changed my car oil and had them put this in, it's suppose to be full synthetic, It was a free oil change and they were raving about it, My son runs a shop and he says it's really good, anyway i'll try it if i don't like it i'll get rid of it, they also give you a sample bottle and check it for free, Monte

The AMSOIL 15W-40 (AME) Heavy Duty Diesel & Marine oil is a CI-4 PLUS oil and the spec sheet show it to have a 157 VI number and the TBN is 12. 1 The thread was talking about a CI-4 oil. True, AMSOIL is not the only oil, there are many out there, that's for sure.

I actually sat in at a demonstration they put on at a Construction equipment show I went to a few years ago. Schaeffer's has been around since the mid 1800s, they started out making wagon wheel grease (no joke). The founder also went into a partnership with Anheuser and bought a small brewery that was on the verge of closing its doors. Schaeffer sold his share and the brewery changed its name to Anheuser Bush.

Aside from engine oil they make specialty lubricants designed for high contamination environments and at one point had contracts with the Military. They still may for all I know. Schaeffers is a smallish company but from what I have seen they make a good product, they're pretty popular around here. They have been around for a long time and If you are into the synthetics, they are a good choice.

The AMSOIL guys really love em too :-laf:-laf
