Fluid Changes For A 03 Automatic

Dealer

Changed the oil today and was filling up the empty bottles to bring to R&S strauss and saw something wanting to float to the top. It turns out to be a tag from the inside of a mechanics glove  I do not use any hand protection ever when working on the truck. I have changed my oil since 12,000 miles dealer gave me free oil changes until 12,000. I just turned 50,000 miles so it was either the dealer or cummins. I am not very happy!

all the more reason to change the oil yourself and save the extra money in labor as well. (although I understand you had free oil changes, so you figured "why not... ") This is exactly why i dont let anyone touch my truck for any maintence reason what so ever. Im sorry to hear about what happened to you. At least it came out of there and didnt appear to do any damage that you can see. :(

I want to know what happened to the rest of the glove? Or even the hand that was in it? Look for the one-handed mechanic at your dealership. I am also a believer of working on your own vehicles. I am just glad that after 26k I have had no reason to bring mine to the dealer.

So Brian you have a Cracker Jack Engine. :D Glad you did find it at least without any damage done.

Little off the topic, but not much I have noticed the Delo 400 15w/40 gallon jugs (which I use) now have a pull tab instead of foil seal. I don't know if any the other brands have pull tabs or not. Just make sure you have all three pull tabs accounted far before you crank up. Oo.

Thats true and those are nice in that you get a clean removal. The Cummins preferred Valvoline stuff has just the foil seal and you have to be real careful breaking those so you don't prefill your oil filter on the outlet side with a piece that could clog an oil port.

I use Valvoline and I HATE that stupid foil! I use a funnel with a filter screen just to be sure, which takes FOREVER for the oil to drain (fine mesh screen). I have written to Valvoline and asked them to stop using the foil. I got the usual boilerplate brushoff.

HOBrian - someone upstairs must be looking out for you! I am amazed that thing never plugged a J-Jet.

Wouldn't the tag have had to get past the oil inlet screen, the oil pump, and the oil filter before doing any damage? It's hard to imagine it doing much more than clogging a return oil hole at the worst, assuming it was dropped inside during an oil change.

I am always super careful about the foil. I had the plastic ring from a quart of oil drop into the filler neck of an Olds 307 thank god the neck necked down about 5 inches from the top and I was able to fish it out with a coat hanger.

I was thinking today that it might have been clogging the oil pick up :--) I have no idea how big the oil pick up is but the tag is about 1/2 inch by 2 inches. It is made of weaved plastic so I guess it could be a really small filter. :(

I think it must have been from Cummins there is no way that it could have gone from the head down to the pan unless it started there.

There was a post not too many moons ago about someone losing their Cummins to a piece of foil from an oil bottle. I think it was a small piece that fell into the oil filter when prefilling it, and then it pumped straight into the oil gallery at startup.

if it was in the sump, the intake screen did its job and kept it there... you should see the parts i find in sumps at work... used conrod bearings, nuts&bolts, broken piston pieces, broken liner pieces, flashlights, sockets [5/16", 1/2", 7/8" are common]... someone once found a hard hat in a sump at work. .

if something does get into the sump, and is something that sinks in the oil, good chance it will never see the pickup screen, and if it does, that will 99% of the time catch it unless it is real small enough to pass the screen [100µ or 150µ i remember hearing but i have no hard numbers on that]
