Stupid question but I'm away from my truck and owners manual... . What is the socket size for a lug nut on my '01 2500 4X4? I want to pick up a new air-driver socket today.

Working from memory here but I think it is 15/16"

Just checked the tools in my truck. 15/16" is correct, don't know if my Craftsman socket is a hair big but it is just like I remembered it, a little sloppy. If you are going to pick up a new socket, look for one that grabs the shoulders of the nut.

Get yourself an impact socket,prefferably a snap-on,mac or matco. Snap on is the best,gte a six point socket,you'll never,ever round one of your lugs off with that Snap on socket-its probably a 25-30 dollar socket-but one rounded lug and its paid for itself. I have taken off lugs that friends have rounded off already with their cheap tools,I slip my snap on over the rounded nut,and off it comes. Being a wrencher myself,I need the best tools to do a good job.

I never thought of metric for the lug nuts on this truck, I'll have to take another look at it. I think the owners manual lists the stud specs as SAE, I check when I go out this AM. Haven't looked at the factory lug wrench yet to see what it measures.

15/16" = . 9375"

Seems just a hair big for my lugs, could be the Craftsman 6 pt socket production tolerance.

24mm = 24 * 0. 03937 = . 94488"

Would be larger yet, if my math is correct. Last time I posted some numbers I got them wrong.

I need some more 1/2" deep sockets, Snap On guy goes down my road nearly everyday. I'll try to flag him down and see how how one of his 15/16" fits.

Thanks for the updates... . I went out and bought a set of SAE craftsman deep socket impact sockets... . I check the tolerance tomorrow - I can't stand sloppy!

Scooby, Taking the nuts off with an impact socket is work made easy. However, when replacing, give thought to the correct specifications for lug-nut tightening. Impact wrenches do not provide you with the same tolerances as a torgue wrench. Placing machine oil on the nut and threads is also a good idea. Happy motoring... Dave
 
According to my 1999 Owner's Manual for my 3500, page 164 states: "Dual wheels are flat mounted, center piloted. The lug nuts are a two piece assembly. When the tires are being rotated or replaced, clean these lug nuts and add 2 drops of oil at the interface between the hex and the washer".

I stand corrected on placing oil on the threads of the stud itself per the manual. Although I have done that for years and never had a lug nut come loose. Dave
 
Whenever i take a vehicle in to Discount Tire for a (free) tire ritation, the mechanics put the lug nuts on loosly with an impact wrench, then the supervisor uses a torque wrench to properly tighten the lug nuts. That means a lot to me, and I quite often tell them so.

You are correct about the warning - I use the impact to remove and also to "spin on" - but I always break-out the torque wrench to get the proper value for final lock down.

Its no fun to have the tools and not use them, right? #ad
 
I thought the nut size was metric (22 mm or 24 mm). I thought they were 22 but I saw the other post that said 24. Can't remember right now. That may be where the slop is if you are using standard. In the last issue of TDR Sam M. advised using antiseize on the threads. I do the spin on with the ratchet then torque with the wrench. Especially on the front, if you are not careful you can warp a rotor with unequal torque on the nuts.
 
The post by Dave D on 3/21 has the numbers right—if the 15/16" fits the nut then a 24 mm will have even more slop.

My measurements make the nut real close to . 930"—a bit less than 15/16 and a lot less than 24 mm.

I'm staying with the 6-point 15/16" socket.
 
Right-on with the 15/16 Thomas. My 6 point is a little sloopy, but that is because I use it so much. Rotating tires with each oil and filter change tends to make good use of that particular socket. Even though I put a little drop of oil on the threads...
