Are the Lund Cold Fronts worth it?

I'm looking for options to keep my truck warm in the winter. My truck normally runs a bit over 140* once it's warmed up. It's hit 190* in the summer (110* outside) and a few times pulling a grade with a trailer, but normally it doesn't get that hot.

I'm not sure if that's normal?

I used a piece of cardboad last year, but it rained a few times during the winter and the carboard fell apart so it didn't work out that good.

Does anyone know how the pieces clip in?

Nate, I got them for my 99 last winter and they seem to do the job, the clips go through each piece (plastic no rust) also easy to take on and off.

I'm going to order them tonight from Summit. I shopped around town this morning and a few places could get them, but $80-90 range.

Nate, I've had them for years and they're great. The plastic spring clips slide into fasteners mounted on the panels. You just line the clips up with the 'honeycomb' of the grill and push in. I was concerned that they might fall out or get help when parked so I drilled each in the center for a nylon bolt and wingnut combo - you hafta open the hood to unsecure! Much better than the stealers nosebra. Besides - do you know how much fabric contracts when the temp drops 30°? - enough to rip!!!

cold fronts

TDR Member Eric Buckle(sp) makes cold fronts for about $20-30 Check the basement enterprises. If not search for his name and pm him.

If your truck will not warm up to around 190 during normal driving, you probably need to replace the thermostat. Actually, the thermostat is probably OK but the rubber seal (or gasket) that is made into it is bad. This happened to mine and had the very same symptoms. After installing the new one, temps come up and hold 190. I actually bought mine through the local dodge dealer (about $40) cheaper than I could from the local cummins dealer ($76).

Hmm, I'll have to check that out. What is basement enterprises?

I might pick one up. Thermostat for my Jeep is like $5... Wonder why makes a thermostat for a Cummins so darn expensive?!

They look like a Robertshaw and have a rubber or neoprene seal that both seals the thermostat poppet as well as the thermostat housing.

I have the lund ones for my 98. 5. The plastic clips are a pita to line up with the honeycomb. A couple won't even line up, but they look nice and do stay in place. I have a set from eric on my 96. They do the same thing, but are bolted on thru the honeycomb with 2 bolts. Way easier install, but you see the shiny bolt heads. No big deal to me, you could even paint them black (the bolts) if ya wanted. Cardboard on the backside of the hood works too. I guess it's a matter of personal preferance really.

I found that, but I don't see the cold fronts listed. Does anyone know this fellows user name so I can get in touch with him?

Nate,

Check the members list for EricBu12. You'll find contact info there.

I just replaced my thermostat today. A Stant #14289 from Advanced Auto Parts for $19. 88 plus tax. It pays to shop around. I have used this brand on other vehicles and have had no problems. Running cold can do all kinds of things to our babies.

If anyone is interested have a set of cold fronts that are trimmed to fit around a "bugshield" that attaches through the grill. I pulled the bugshield off becuse it blocks the hood scoops.

10%

Be sure not to cover the entire grill area. I can't remember now, but we need to leave either 10 or 20% of the grill area open. I think this is stated in the owners manual. I have a winter front and a screen front from Cabella's. I have been very happy with it since 2002.

When I read this thread I ordered a set from Summit on saturday, arrived this morning and on my truck shortly after.

I looked at that link and think the other guys look better, Maybe they are just on better looking trucks.

I just mailed a check off to Eric this afternoon for a set of his. $30 shipped

It was 77* today  Some crazy warm spell.

Cold front

Nate,

I lived in AK 03-04 and what most of the locals do up there is go to the canvas or tarp shop and have them design a cover for the front.

using snaps on the top radiator frame then drape it down the front of the radiator and bungee down below on the frame. This kept my temps up even at -40. Thay put a zipper in the center to adjust the flow when it warmed up a little. The other benefit is make the same size cover but use screen to keep the bugs off in the summer. The cold front that clip on the front still allow air from below the grill to make contact with the radiator.

Not an expert, just followed a proven method.
