Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Lyman 310 Tool

I have a friend who wants to use a Lyman 310 to load . 45 ACP, but Lyman doesn't make dies for this application. Does anyone know of a source for . 45 ACP dies to fit the 310?

I have a couple of 310 tools and dies. The Lyman 310 tool uses dies with their own fine thread. I believe you can only use Lyman 310 dies in a Lyman 310 tool. On the other hand, I also have an old 3 port Lee turret press that kicks out . 45 Autos just fine. These presses show up used for ~$50, dies are about $30 from Midway... cheaper than a Lyman 310 tool and dies, if Lyman made them for the . 45!

I started using one of these back in the 1960's. It was handy for kitchen table reloading. This technology is mor than 100 years old and Lyman and "Ideal" both made . 45ACP dies for it. You may have to comb a few gunshows to find the dies. Here is a link. Hope it helps. GregH

Greg, thanks for the link. The prices are higher than the current standard sizes from Midway, but if you want something different you have to expect to pay for it. My friend is looking at the 310 for its lower price, not for the convenience of being able to deprime and size in front of the TV. For the prices on your link, he can almost afford a new "real" press. I forwarded the link, and I'll talk to him at work Monday.

Dave, I wouldnt buy one of these as a new loader. There is alot better equipment out there. However, this was a mainstay of the old buffalo hunters and general loading cheaply, many years ago where neck sizing and depriming was adequate case rework. In many cases this was the most accurate method of case prep, it still is! Wilson dies are much better with a small arbor press used with rifle cartridges. If you are loading pistol ammo like the . 45ACP, a progressive press is the best way to go. Alot more expensive but well worth it in production.

I have loaded . 45 LC, 30/40 Krag, . 30/06, . 243 Win. , and . 45/70 Black and smokeless loads using the 310 tool. It works! I have 2 and use the handles to prime cases, often. GregH
