Thanks, TDR Staff

Just had to tell the world!

Going to Kauai in oct. Any sight seeing recomendations?

About a week and a half ago, I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Dr. has me on an antibodic to cure it but most days I feel consistently fatigued and feel like I got hit by a Greyhoud bus or Mack truck :-laf I feel like I am 91 instead of 41. Just curious if anyone else has had it and how long it took to get back to normal?

TIA,

Paul

A friend of mine got it years ago before anyone ever really knew what it was. He fought it for a very long time before they finally figured out what it was. Being they caught yours early on, I hope you get it under control before too long. Best of luck.

I know of a few who have had it... after all it was discovered in Ct right?

One of those is a guy I work with. He was out for several months and then was "tired" and felt crappy for on and off for a couple of years.

I think he's finally over it.

Not sure how long he had it before he was diagnosed... may have been a while.

Hope your recuop is much quicker than his... . I'm sure today's drugs are much better.

I think it can be fatal if left untreated for too long, so make sure you get it snuffed out ASAP. I believe TDR member Rob Hanson passed away from complications of Lyme's Disease. I think the longer it goes untreated, the longer it can plague you. My dad worked with a guy who had it for a while before diagnosis and he suffered permanent damage from it.

Yea, had it TWICE ! Surprizing part is I've only had 2 tick bites in the last 30 years and both were infected. The first time it took them 4 months to diagnose as it was rare around here at the time. Exhaustion, fever, aches and some weird nervous system and vision episodes. Couple hundred mG of Doxycycline every day for a month knocked it out but I still have some knee and hip pain from time to time. It took over a year before I began to feel somewhat normal. The second time I got it the symptoms showed up immediately and I was back on Doxy within 2 days. I got by it that time with little discomfort.

A few notes here, Rob Hanson died of ALS and also had Lyme disease, he believed the two probably worked together to quicken his exit from earth. For anyone that ever met him you could not find a nicer person. He was the consumate host at bomber parties, even when you just stopped on by to say hi. From the first time he met somebody he made you feel like a long lost friend, A truly great man, that we should all strive to have his positive the glass is totally full attitude. He never thought the glass was only half full.

Onto lyme disease, from what I heard/read if you catch it quick and take antibiotics the recovery time to being back to normal is several months. If it goes undiagnosed for several months, then you could feel like dog doo for several years.

I thought there was a vaccine for Lyme disease or is that just for dogs? If so does it work and what are the side affects?

I have a friend in DU that has/had it. They didn't diagnose it fast and really messed with his mobility. I haven't seen him for quite a while, but when they finally got him on meds, it did slow down. That was a few years back. With quick diagnosis and new meds, you should not have those problems. Good luck and God speed.

Paul,

I had it in '88. Antibiotics knocked it out. At that time there was a lot of publicity about it. Hardly hear of it much anymore. When I was done with the anitbiotics, I had to go in for a blood test - it was called a Lyme Disease titre - or something like that. After that, they told me my titre number wasn't negative or positive. I didn't get what that meant. They told me to come back for another blood test later. Instead, I called the Marshfield clinic. At that time they had a toll free hotline just for Lyme Disease. They told me my number was ok and if I didn't develop symptoms again that I shouldn't worry. That's the last I had to do with it. The symptoms can be very vague. In my case it was joint pain, headaches, and fatigue - nothing I don't have anyway! But put it all together and you have it. The bullseye rash on the small of my back is what tipped me off to it. I never saw the tick or even knew I was bitten.

Good luck.

I had it about 8 years ago, it was diagnosed early, anad I was prescribed antibiotics for it. I was actually the first case my Doctor ever treated. I have several health problems like joint pain, but since they had already told me I had early signs of Arthritis it may be from that alone. There are a lot of possible problems you can get from untreated Lyme disease though.

My dog has it and we caught it by the annual blood test so we put her on drugs right away and she has never shown any symptoms. A guy at work has it, he spent a few days in the hospital until they figured out what it was, he seemed to bounce right back to normal. Good luck with it.

Thanks for all the responses! I guess I am fortunate it was diagnosed early. I forgot that Rob had Lymes in conjunction with Lou Gehrig's. Sure do miss him.

My SIL's whole family had it.

I remember our nephew on antibiotics for 3 months through IV. At home. A nurse came in to start the IV. That was several years ago, I suppose the treatments are much more effective and easier to administer now than then.

I thought I had lymes for a long time.

Turns out to be Chronic fatigue syndrome. :(
