Well had a little run in with a Mack Truck today. He won but barely. I was passing him on a narrow two lane country road in east texas with the Power Max set on 5. He is on the centerline, so my drivers sider training wheel is just about in the grass. Just as I am getting up to the cab, I notice about 50 yards in front of me is an even narrow bridge over a creek. This is bad news. Too late to hit brakes and save face, so I hold steady and try and squeeze through it. Kept left side from hitting concrete embankment by about an inch, but the lugnuts on his front wheel decide to become a little to friendly with my back right tire and wheel. Ass end of the truck gets picked up about 2 ft of the ground, but I manage to keep it between the lines and get past him. Thinking I have just ripped up the whole side of my truck, I pull over with him and to my suprise it just trashed the rim and the tire. Pretty good damage to the rim and tire, but not a scratch on the paint. His truck is fine, I apologize to him, we mutually agree to forget it ever happened and he drives away. I'm already short a spare so I 5 wheel it home. Just that just means I get to order a the new tires I have been wanting.

Luckily the Big Man upstairs was watching out for me today!

So does anyone have a stock rim from a 3500 (2001 or 2002) that they want to unload for cheap?

Sorry so long.

Never violate the "Law of Gross Tonnage"

you'll lose every time. Fortunately it's on our side most of the time.

You know, I have read, saw, and done some pretty crazy and dumb things in my short life (23 yrs) and this one ranks right up there. If that would have been me in that Mack, we would have been doing this when it was over :-{} . Doing stuff like that, you are not only risking your own safety, but the safety of others around. That is one reason why they are considering moving all duallies into a commercal catagory and making the owners have CDL's in some states, and just to add some more salt to the wound, raising all of our insurance rates. Next time you try this, don't let your ego get the best of you and if it does, do it some place where the road is wider, and no bridges. ;)

I have a spare, never used, never even had a tire mounted on it black steel rim from my 2001. 5. I'm not too close to you though (western NY). PM or email me if you are interested though.

Benhall, I take your message in stride and realize that it sounds like I was being stupid. But I think most people would have been passing there in the same situation. The road was empty, straight and I popped my head around a couple of times to make sure before the attempt. The lack of signs giving warning of a narrower bridge were also lacking. I understand this was still completely my fault, and I take responsibility for my own actions. But do not think of me as an idiot driver who does dumb things. And I apologized about a hundred times to the nice driver of the Mack truck. I made a mistake and I admit it.

And yes next time I will make sure the road is a little wider.

aburbach,

My first thought after reading the story was, how's your shorts!? I know mine would have been sucked in permanently and/or in need of a change!

That had to have had a seriously high pucker factor!

I had a friend with an F350 dually that came to a narrow bridge that he hooked with one wheel. It spun the truck around, flipped it into the creek upside down. He was unhurt. He had a friend tell him to buy a chevy. He said no way, it ran better than a chevy upside down. He had to reach in an turn it off. So now we know Dodges are even better. They stay right side up. :)

I ran into a similar experience on Rte 2 in Northern Ohio. It was dark and I was in the left lane on a divided highway, along side a semi, when my lane ran out. The sign was bocked by the semi and I never saw it.

I had the choice of slamming on the brakes and possibly skidding into a concrete barrier or the side of the semi, or gas it and squeeze between the semi and the concrete barrier. The truck driver didn't give me an inch, but I made it.

Sometimes **** happens, I almost got taken out on a narrow bridge by a truck moving half of a double wide coming towards me. the escort truck did not realize that the bridge was as narrow as it was. Luckily I was paying attention and I locked them up missing the half double wide by a few inches, (it took all of its lane and half of mine, I got the ditch and almost got the bridge abutment). After I cleaned out my pants I drove on. It would of been their fault, but I would of been dead :( Glad you made it. Driving is a contact sport, That is why I like to drive a 7600lb truck :D

What would a CDL do to keep people form doing stupid things (Not that I think what aburbach was stupid). I have seen alot of drivers with CDLs do things that would scare you to death just to see them. If these states wanted to do something, maybe a class in how to load a trailer would be better. I don't know how many times I have seen someone pulling a trailer with a car/tractor/wood and there is WAY to much tung wieght. And on top of that, they are doing this with a bumper mounted ball. I am supprised that we don't have more trailers running down the highway by them selves! The other problem I see alot are people not using a ball that is rated for the wight they are pulling.

aburbach, I am glad that things worked out for you!
