Competition spool it or lock it?

Competition 1/8 mile times

Well I finally went and got the Red Rocket to the track!

I went to a test and tune at Portland International Raceway last night. To make a long story short the truck rocks and I suck. This is the first time I have been on a racetrack since high school and boy could you tell.

First run 0. 56 reaction time (Not a Pro tree) :(

I made three runs and the best was a 12. 72 @ 113 mph

My 60ft times were terrible I have a lot of work to do (on my driving) the truck ran great I never had a problem other than I blew one boot off on the second run when I hit O/D and lost traction at 3/4 track

I had a blast and can't wait to go again

:D

Just how 'terrible' were the short-times?

High 12's @ 113 still isn't too shabby...

With that MPH and good traction... a high 11 should be pretty easy.

Keep up the good work! I'm glad you're enjoying the truck...

Matt

Hoss, keep us all posted when and where your heading out again. I would like to come video tape. As long as its on any Sunday. Gary

So were ya nervous? :D Once you get used to it, it will become second nature and you'll shave some time off those slips

uh YEA!!!!!!!!! I was a mess  I dont think I have ever shaked so hard in my life!!!! But what a rush :D I was a slightly controlled mess the last run and was very happy with it :D

The first run I hit O/D at about 3/4 track and the thing went sideways on me  Need more control (of myself not the truck) I cannot believe how much fun that was!!!!Oo.

60ft times were 2. 2 and 2. 1 :(

first run reaction time was . 56 (NOT a pro tree :{ )

second was . 24  better

third was . 34 need to work on that but I had a blast and now I know I can drive the thing I just need to get a LOT better :D

"60ft times were 2. 2 and 2. 1"

Yeah, there's definitely some room for improvement there...

Seems like most folks around here don't have much trouble getting into the mid 1. 8's on their short times... that'll help out your ET quite a bit.

As you have found out... it's going to take some time before you're really comfortable with the truck and how it handles.

Make it leave straight and hard... and you'll be good to go!

I have seen this truck run several times when it was down this way, you need to get with some of the guys who used to run it down the track, maybe they can give you some pointers.

still not bad numbers...

THE FORD GUY Oo. Oo. Oo.

Hoss,

I'm no drag racer but my 60 foot times with my first gen before doing much to it were around 2. 5 so you should be a LOT faster than that. How much boost are you leaving the line with?

Glad to hear you got it on the track. Have you hooked up the drugs yet or are you on #2 only?

#2 only The first run I launched it sideways at 3/4 track when I hit O/D and

One thing about the 60ft times is I was not doing any burnout. I was worried about stalling the truck by coming off the throttle too fast after I did a burnout so I just passed on it this time. I will work on this at home so I can hit the burnout box without killing the truck and hopefully with hot tires better my times.

hoss

here is what i used to do so my truck wouldn't dye after the burnout.

i would start my burnout in 1st gear, then i would upshift into drive. once i felt the tires were warm enough i would shift into neutral, and let off the brakes the motor was still reved up and it never died using this method.

i did the same thing at the end of the track also. once i cross the line i just shift into neutral and keep it reved up.

in muncie mine died at the end of the track, and that sucked at over 100mph and no steering or brakes.

once you heat those tires, the times will really drop.

That's good advice... but make sure you are really careful about your shifter position.

Accidentally shifting into reverse with the vehicle still going forward will eat your low-reverse band/drum in a heartbeat.

I have seen the aftermath firsthand many times...

I'm not saying that it's a bad idea... only that you have to be really, really careful.

Matt

I have a manual valve body and a ratchet shifter so there is no chance of hitting reverse. I am already doing the hit neutral at the end of the run thing so I will give the same method a try in the burnout box.

Thanks for the replies :D being new to the diesel drag stuff this really helps!!!

That's great. My advice still stands to drivers without a similarly well equipped truck, however. :)

Matt

Matt,

Not trying to pick on you or anything, but it's a NHRA rule that the shifter can be thrown and must lock out reverse. Like the stock shifter too, it wont go in reverse if you don't pull it back.

They'll go into reverse without pulling back if they have some miles on them...

Matt

Take a die grinder and grind the notch deeper and with a stock shifter grind a notch for second gear to keep from shifting from 1st to 3rd.
