I was in Home Depot the other day, and as usual I prowled around looking at the compressors and hand tools and things that go "whirrrr" to see what I needed, and of course whether they were made in America. Apparently the word is getting out that we want some good American made tools, because I noticed that the Husky upright compressor with wheels had "MADE IN THE USA" prominently cast into the plastic shroud.

This tickled me because I had previously gone in there and had to turn the compressors every which way trying to find the tiny tag that said "Made in Mexico" or "Made in China".

So today we went to get some parts, and while in Sears I went and looked at the compressors there. To my surprise, the uprights they had on sale today (oil less pump, upright with wheels) was prominently marked "Made in USA of domestic and imported components", with a metal tag on the tank noting that it had been certified by Devilbiss. Their Professional compressors had the same marking and tag, but with a hefty twin cylinder oil-lubed pump.

I was pretty impressed with the Craftsman Pro compressors, they appeared to be much more ruggedly built than the old top of the line units I had looked at there before. I'd like to try one out... .

I know what you mean about made in USA! I was shopping for new work boots today. Pick out my usual Red Wings and look inside the tongue. MADE IN CHINA!!!! I kept looking and did find some made in the USA. What really gets me is the Chinese ones where just as much as the domestic. Just more profit for the company. I'm sick of this crap. We need to keep looking for and insisting on made in the USA.

ps. Yes, my Dodge is assembled in Mexico, but the engine, transfer case, F&R differentials, along with lots of other parts, are made in the states, so I justify it that way, but I need to start looking for and buying only American assembled trucks. I heard one story that one of the Dodges assembly plants in Mexico saved a bunch of money by not having to build a parking lot for the employees, none of them could afford a car. Makes you wonder who is going to buy all the new cars? American workers need to take a stand, or there won't be any of us left.

Someone on another board was recently commenting that the latest Grizzly catalog seems to have lots of US-made stuff (more than they used to).

While I certainly don't want anyone to get hurt, I hope the bad press on China over the past year continues. I really think it's helping a lot.

sears doesn't have the cool compressors like mine any more, it's a 33 gallon single stage twin cylinder oil less, the flow capacity of this thing is amazing for a home unit it'll not only keep up with a grinder it will get ahead of it and shut off

I'm glad to hear that things are changing for the better. I also like to buy American when possible, but sometimes it is difficult to do. Jobs are only one concern; when I was in Iraq 2005-2006, we sure took a lot of incoming Chi-Com 107mm and 122mm rockets. Only the outgoing ordnance was marked with "Made in USA"... . :D

retailers LOVE made in china, especially Cloths/Shoes,

MUCH bigger mark up, they can sell less and make more money,
& through out the returns/rejects... and still Make a bunch$$$$

Less mark up on US, & Quality has to be better.
People except junk from China, won't accept it from US made...

SHOES, Check this CoveShoe.com - The Official Cove Shoe Company Website
They have both import and US MAde, Not Cheap but Last.

I try to buy “Made in the USA” products as much as possible. Sears had a Craftsman utility knife on sale during Christmas that I almost bought, but when I saw that it was “Made in China” I put it down. I’m very disappointed in Sears. I can’t believe how many Craftsman products are made in China. It use to be I would only buy a Craftsman product. Now I am looking elsewhere. However, I still can’t find a leave rake that is made in the states.

My wife ordered some table lamps. When we put them on the table they were crooked. The base of the lamp and the upright portion are not perpendicular to each other. Yes, they were made in China. When we returned them and the clerk asked in anything was wrong. I made it a point to say they are being returned because of poor quality. Hopefully if enough people return this garbage the companies will get the message.

I used to buy 1 or 2 pairs of work boots a year. Even "big name" boots wouldn't last more than a year.

Then, I found a company called "Danner". They build boots in Oregon. Tey also built boots for the military. I now have 3 pairs... 1 insulated for winter, and 2 for summer (I like to rotate boots during the hot & humid summer). I had to get the original pair of summer boots resoled (YES, the uppers lasted long enough to go through 2 resolings), & Danner resoled them for $25 (It's higher now). I can stand in ankle deep ice water all day long, & my feet stay warm & dry. My very first pair is finally wearing out on the inside (after 10 years of abuse) & I will have to decide whether to have them "factory rebuilt", or throw them away. :{

When my dog was a puppy, he chewed the laces out of my winter boots. When I contacted Danner to get replacements (The boots are tall & I couldn't find laces long enough locally), the rep asked for my mailing address... he sent me a pair of laces at no charge.

I'm not sure if they are still made in the USA, as the last time I bought a pair was 2 years ago. I sure hope so!

m zupkow, yes danner are still made here in portland or. at least most of the models are. i use them for tree climbing and tree work (super rain forest model) and have had one pair for 4 years! kinda haggard but they still work. danner rules.

come on it is really made in USA with global components... . dont believe all the stickers you see...

dont you see it is cheaper to send the compressors in lots of little boxes and then assemble here in US especially when you can then put the good sticker on it

lol

:) :-laf :D I have had a craftsman air compressor for several years and I absolutely love it and it is made in the USA. Any craftsman tools that aren't made in the USA are the ones that don't have there full unlimited unsatisfied or for whatever other reason you want are made in other parts of the world.

Don't be fooled... . I had a friend that worked at a local factory, and it was one persons job on the line to remove the "made in mexico/china "labels and put on "made in U. S. A. " labels.....

I don't mind our trucks being made in Mexico by people in our neighboring Country. It's better then to have those people crossing our borders illegally in search of work in our Country. I'd much rather support our two neighboring Countries then China, India or Pakistan.

Excellent point! ;):D

I ended up getting the Craftsman pro compressor, and am very pleased with it indeed. The motor is very quiet and it pumps up to capacity fairly quickly. Only gripe I have with it is the drain valve, which is not a regular petcock valve but instead is a small cylindrical knob that screws in and out.

Certainly when it comes to "Made in America" it's easy to get fooled, but even if all that is happening is an American guy changing labels  that is an infinitely higher ratio of American worker input than one that is assembled in China: (X American labor ) / (zero American labor) = infinity.

For those who don't care where their products are built, be sure to pat that Chinese compressor on the tank after your next $4 a gallon diesel fillup in your truck. :-laf :-laf

For the math nerds...

(X American labor ) / (zero American labor) = infinity.

Technically, this isn't equal to infinity, it's undefined. Anything divided by zero is mathematically undefined.

... but that's WAY off topic.

Glad to hear the compressor is working out for you. Exactly which Craftsman Pro did you get?

Mike, re. draining moisture out of Compressor tank, harbor Freight has an automatic one, and perhaps you could get one from an industrial compressor dealer, and or industrial hardware supply, although kneeling once in a while does tend to make one humble, good for the Soul, and many feel refreshed after. (Muslims do it 5 times per day, yes, would make many Mad and seek a rapid exit from life)

This is the one:

Craftsman Professional 25 gal. Air Compressor, 1. 8 hp, Horizontal Tank - Model 19541 at Sears.com

If you click on the reviews you will see that most people are extremely happy with this compressor because it is so quiet, however there have been some who found small leaks and misaligned motor mount (makes belt squeal apparently). I checked mine out when I bought it, and its quality was A+, no leaks or poor alignment.

I have a 60-gallon upright in our shop and while it is able to deliver more air it is painful to be around because its so loud. This little compressor is much, much quieter and I am finding it is very handy to wheel around. Heavier than it looks, but you can easily maneuver it around in the house and shop without busting a gut lugging a pancake style compressor.
