Thats pretty funny... ... ... ... . I see jiffy lube and all the other cheapy outfits do drain and refills with metal inside from breakage and wear, but I guess you know it all :-laf :-laf

... ... ... Bob, I wasn't trying to argue or insult your opinion. I am not a know-it-all. I did express my opinion and I'm sorry that offended you. :(

I will agree to disagree with you.

I went ahead and bought a PML rear diff cover yesterday. I had a MagHT on my 01 but it was $60 cheaper and the only game in town then. My main reason for getting an aftermarket diff cover is for the added capacity, the better heat transfer of the finned aluminum and since the AAM axles require 15,000 mile oil changes, it'll make that much easier. I like to look inside the pumpkin and see what's going on, but not twice a year...

Thanks again,

Pat

The reason behind no drain plug is to make you pull the cover and look at what's inside Oo.

Yeah... ... ... ... ... . like everyone at the dealerships know what their doing! LOL I've been mis-informed too much to blindly trust anyone. I trust my work. Research is essential.

I've had PML on the trans and rear diff. a long time. Work well and cost less. Those of us that care about our trucks pull covers and check routinely but with a drain plug we can change fluid UNDER recommended times easier.

Mag-Hytec Fluid Levels?

Hi Bob 4X4,

What are your thoughts & have you noticed any problems with the elevated fluid levels that Mag-Hytec recommends?

The "high" mark on the dipstick puts the fluid level at the bottom of the axle shaft. The "low" mark puts the level at just inside the axle tube. And the "plug" in the middle of the ID label, on the back of the cover, puts the level at the factory recommended level.

DC seems pretty serious about what level the fluid should be at.

I think most people are filling to the "high" level to take advantage of the extra fluid capacity.

Are we taking much of a chance for problems by filling to the higher levels?

Have you seen problems associated with over filling the diff's?

A friend, with a Duramax, was told by the GM mechanic that changed his gear oil, that "He's" seen a number of axle failures on trucks with rearend covers that allow higher than recommended fluid levels, and that the stock cover is just fine.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks.

The first time I paid for my diffs to get serviced, they used a suction pump to get the fluid out from the fill hole. No way to see what's going on there.

I now will be doing the services myself, and checking the magnetic drain plug for chunks. IMO that should be sufficient.

Nobody has matched Mah-hytec quality yet !

Might be good quality, no better than the PML though, too bad it does not use all the factory bolt holes or have a dipstick that shows when filled to the correct factory reconmended level.

Ive got a PML diff cover on my truck, and its worked out very well. The fluid temps are cold as ice, and the drain and fill plugs are 10x easier to work with than any stock setup. Having a port for a temp sender already in the diff cover is a nice feature as well.

I changed out my rear diff @ 5K miles. There was a bit of sludge in the bottom of the case and a film of gray metal sludge on the cover. I cleaned everything and refilled.

I changed the diff fluid again at 12. 5K miles and the oil and interior surfaces were much cleaner. Point being, I would wait until I had clean oil changes before doing just a drain and refill. I am probably going to get a PML cover next diff change and go to a 15K service interval.

Just my 2 cents worth, periodically adjusted for inflation and reduced by the amount of state and local taxes. Your actual cost may vary... ... . :)

I have the PML covers transmission and rear Diff. I like their product and will highly recommend. I had mine custom powder coated from a local dealer. . I wold post some pics but I get to large a file each time... I will figure it out when I get to my portable drive after the holidays. .

Does anyone know if a Mag-Hytec cover will fit with a 315 as a spare.

I will guess you have a 3rd gen since you can fit the 35 between the rails..... yes it will clear on my truck. I have the KORE suspension and on road no problem if you want to use all that travel you will have to pull it back about an inch or so to avoid any interferance.

Joe,I havent seen any issues with using Mag hy-tecs levels. I have tested both my trucks off-road, on the track ,(you saw That at least 10 passes) towing, way too many dyno runs to count, and tearing up the dunes Oo. with no one able to keep up No foaming... ... use the correct fluids. I have seen quit a few issues with the AA in the begining with stock covers and correct levels as well as low

What's the "new" recommended capacity for the rear diff (11. 5 AAM) when running the PML? Going to order some Amsoil soon and need to know how much to get!
