Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Mag Hytec 727DD slow leak...

I've had a Mag Hytec double deep trans pan on my truck for a few years now and it has had a slow leak for almost the whole time. Rather than leak in one spot it weeps around the whole perimeter where the gasket is. I've tried retorqueing it a few times but no luck, it still weeps enough to create slow drips from the bottom fins and coats my skid plate with oil. I used the original fiber gasket, (or cork, not sure), that came with the pan from Genos. I ordered a new gasket from genos in case nothing else works I will reinstall with new gasket.

Anybody else have this problem and if so how did you fix it. Do they make a rubber gasket for this pan. How about RTV, anyone use it on their fiber gasket from Mag Hytec? I think I still have the original Dodge OEM gasket, anybody use the OEM gasket on the Mag Hytec trans pans. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I experienced the same thing with mine. I loctited the bolts,used the Mag Hytec gasket and still had the weep. I believe in the last year of ownership of the '98.5 I reinstalled the steel pan. Not a drop.
In contrast,my Mag Hytec rear diff cover has never leaked a drop with the supplied O ring.

OK, I did some searches here on the TDR and found a post where a guy recommended using Loctite 518 on a leaky Mag Hytec rear differential cover. The differential cover came with a rubber o-ring that was leaking so it was suggested to use a gasket and Loctite 518, which is a anaerobic sealer/gasket maker. I'm thinking that I could replace my transmission gasket with a new one and seal both sides with this Loctite 518, my only concern is getting the pan off after using the sealant on the gasket. Anybody out there use Loctite 518, how hard is it to remove the sealed parts?

I have the plastic/rubber gasket with no problems. I threw the gasket that came with the pan in the trash, been there done that with that and cork gaskets.

Hey,I had a DTT w/89% tc too installed by Fred Swanson! I tried the rubber gaskets also.

If its leaking around the bolts pull one out at a time, clean the oil off the bolts with brake clean and dry . Apply a small amount of silicon around each bolt head and torque to 13 ft lbs.

Hey,I had a DTT w/89% tc too installed by Fred Swanson! I tried the rubber gaskets also.

Yeah Fred is a good guy. It's a shame DTT went down the road on their customers tho.

get a rubber gasket and throw the cork one in the garbage you can make cork work but you have to torque it slowly just did a pan gasket on a new holland tractor took up the bolts a little bit at a time over 3 days and it still squished out a little bit in a spot or two

I second this, use the OEM Rubber Gasket from Mopar and your problems will be gone.
I never had a single problem on my trucks and cars with this gasket, on OEM Pans and Mag Pans.
Don't overtorque the bolts.

I also have the Mag Hytec rear differential cover and like you have had no leaks at all. Wish I could say the same about the trans pan.

Loctite 518 will be my second option, but I don't feel comfortable not using a gasket because of the possibility of the bolts bottoming out.

My first option is going to be using the OEM gasket, unfortuneately I couldn't find it today, (I think I tossed it), which isn't too expensive, but like an idiot I think I tossed the oem pan also.

whens the last time you serviced the trans? be a good time to change oil and filter most filters come with rubber gasket .if you want to use the cork gasket get some gasket tack and glue one side of the gasket to the pan and then torque it up slow .

Update! So I went ahead and ordered a new OEM trans gasket and guess what, before it got here I found my old OEM gasket and pan that I thought I had tossed. So now I have a spare gasket if I ever need it. Installed the new gasket about a week ago and no leaks or weeping yet, knock on wood. Let it drain overnight and it took twelve quarts to fill it. Hopefully this problem is over.

I had a DD pan on a '97, '99 and an '06. I also had front and rear diff covers on all three trucks. Both the '97 and '06 had 200K leak free miles when I sold them. The '99 is around 300K miles now and has never leaked. I never used the cork gasket on any of them. I change transmission fluid every 15K miles and I use the rubber gasket that comes with the filter from Carquest or Napa on the '97 and '99. When I ordered the pan for my '06, it came with a hardened form fitted gasket. I used that same gasket for 200K miles. Every time I change fluid, I drop the pan and clean both surfaces of the pan and transmission. I do the same for the diff covers. This process has given me many trouble free leak free miles. Maybe I'm just lucky.
