It would not be hard for AAM to fix that, right?

I've carried loads up to 5,000# in the bed of my truck and tow a 5th wheel with a pin weight of approx 2300# and as far as I can tell the spare and Mag-Hytec cover have never touched. In fact, the temp. sending unit is in the top of the cover and I am positive it has never touched the tire. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it's had many opportunities. I know of one member that delivers rvs and trailers and has used a M-H cover on his over the last year and probably 70-80K miles, I haven't heard where he has had any problems. I do intend to load my truck soon to investigate this, so nobody panic... ... ..... yet. :D

I was thinking the problem would be worse on a 4x2, than on a 4x4. Since there is less space between axle and truck bed(which the spare is mounted to) on a 4x2???

So anyone who has a mag hytec cover and doesn't want it, shoot me an email, I'd be interested in it. -- email address removed --

Thanks!

Joe is that with your '97 or '04? Do you have the offset plate on your '04? We tried a dry fit with the cover and it didn't look good for clearance. If an offset plate remedys the problem I would be interested how you did it.

Thanks Ken

I too was planning on adding a Mag-Hytec cover when the fluids were changed. Not so sure now. Has anybody tried one of these?

Your Covers .com

Maybe RTWhitfield can check out the dimensions of one of these and compare to his Mag-Hytec before it gets sent back.

nwj, thx for the post... it looks like a good option, I believe the last cover listed will fit our trucks. it is 4. 01" wide. I'm not sure how wide the Maghytec is? I assume this product has a probe port, by the looks of it, but it doesn't say anything about it?

It was not raining here today, for a change. So I went out and looked closely under my truck. There is no way the Mag-Hytek is going to fit. If the stock cover was not angled away at the top it would hit too.

The only way to make the Mag-Hytek fit would be to grind the top fins at an angle like the stock.

I paid too much for the cover to have to start modifying it.

I would like to have the extra capacity and the extra cooling of the fins, and to be able to drain the sump without having to take the cover off, but I am going to wait for Mag-Hytek to make one specific for the Dodge.

I was talking about the 97. I have an offset plate on both. There seems to be more clearance on the 04, and probably enough even without the plate.

Geez, guys, if you are all that upset, email me and I'll see about making you an offset plate.

I went out and did some more checking and here is what I found. Laying a straight edge against the back of the cover it touched the spare 5/8-3/4" from the edge of the tire. The tire is 3 1/2" above the cover. I hooked up my trailer and raised the landing gear. The gap between the cover and tire closed to 1 1/2". The thing that surprised me was the overhang of the tire did change, it was 1/2". Close inspection of the tire and cover reveiled no marks, scuffing, or other signs of damage or contact. The cover has been on since last Jan and we have pulled our trailer at least 7 times without incident. As firm as the suspension is I am not worried about it with the truck unladen, but before we go camping next month I plan to find a way to move the spare back about 3/4-1".

OK guys, I just measured the Mag-hytec cover, and it is not as large as the cover from Yourcovers.com.

The Hy-tec is 3. 75 inches from the base to the outside of the cover. 13. 5 wide and 14 tall.

The Yourcovers is 4. 01 from backing plate, 13. 5 wide and 14 tall.

Any one have either of these on a 2003-4 2WD DRW?

I really think the cover will hit the spare tire when I have the trailer attached. The sharp edges of the cover would contact the spare with the expected results I am afraid.

I am going to email Mag-Hytec today and ask them if a cover that fits is going to be manufactured any time soon.

And easily the best truck I have ever owned!

I guess I will go the bracket route, because I really want a Hytec cover. Another option is to deflate the spare, and keep a compressor on board?... hmmm

Mag Hy Tech cvr fix

This simple but effective fix cured any problem with my spare and my Mag Hy-Tech cover ever making contact. Even with 2500 lbs of salt in my 2003 4x4 3500 Quad Cab SRW, the spare would'nt touch, unless I was to hit some large dip in the road Then I could see how this could be possible. The simple fix, assuming you have the Stock sized 265's is to take a motorcycle tie down latch one end to the spare tire and the other end to the rear frame cross memeber, loosen the slack holding the tire up then tighten the tie down, which will pull the tire back towards the rear of the frame then raise the tire back up and your done. It's simple, takes less than two minutes and costs only a few $ and is not seen! I love the look of the Mag Hy Tech and now I don't have to worry at all about the spare ever coming in contact with the Mag Hy Tech. Maybe this two cent opinion might help someone:)

lndscpe

That was one of the ideas I was contemplating. That way the tire stays balanced when raising and lowering.

Looks like the yourcovers.com cover for the 11. 5 uses the bottom center bolt that the mag does not, that is one of the reasons I have not ordered the mag yet. If anyone gets one perhaps they can confirm this, it is also quite a bit cheaper.

Just trying to figure out if my 3500 2WD DRW sits any lower in the rear than a 4WD?

From the ground to the top of the rear wheel opening is 39 3/4 inches empty.

Would some one measure their 4WD to see what it measures.

Also the measurement of a 2500 2WD and 4WD would be nice to know, and while we're at it, a SRW 3500.

Thanks,

Tom Whitfield

OK, just got the mag hytech and will install it tomorrow. Guess I will try cinching the spare like lndscpe suggested.

How many QTs of Lube will I have to buy, is it 4 ? ???

Well I want the drain plug with magnet, I want a probe for my temp gauge and I like the dip stick... . so it would be a real pain to try to do all that with the stock cover... . plus you get more volume of lube with the Maghytech. When I had my stock 96' my Dana Dif. went out on me while towing up a grade. If that didn't happend I probably wouldn't be installing this unit..... live and learn!

It will take over 7 qts if you fill to the mark on the dipstick. This however brigs the level way above the level in the standard cover. I e-mailed Hy-tech about this and they said that it was the correct level. I am going to put mine back on shortly after my next and last trip to the dealer but this still nags me as to which would be correct. I took it off becouse of the leak around the bottom bolt that is not used and just have not got around to fixing it yet.
