Mag Hytec Trannie pan change

Just called down to the Mobil 1 Lube Express to inquire how much they would charge to change my trannie pan and filters... ..... I have the filters and the Mag Hytec trannie pan.



$300 for Mobil 1 Synthetic and R&R trannie pan and filters.



Truth be known, I really want Amsoil. Therefore my question is: If I drop the trannie pan and filters myself, how much of the old fluid is left in the system that I cannot get out?



Is this a doable option?

You will have to drain the converter also. It will not be a dry fill still, I would estimate about a quart or possible near 2 is still left in the system count the cooler and lines.

And draining the converter is how big a job? How many quarts does the whole system take to refill including the extra 3 quarts for the MHT pan?

With the filter change and the pan replacement, you will most likely get 10-11 qts back in.

What I have done is run it for a few hundred miles with the first fluid change and then drain it and refill with new. Don't change the filter or drop the pan. With the 2nd fluid change (approx 9-10 qts), you will have gotten most if not all of the old stuff out.

If you have the time, let the truck sit overnight and loosen the 10 valve body mounting bolts. You will get 10-11 quarts out of the transmission. Retorque them to 100 INCH pounds. Very few, if any, vehicles have torque converter drains today.

I don't think I am brave enough to start unbolting things on or in the transmission.



How effective would I be if I R&R the pan(installing the MHT pan) change the filters and then replenish the fluid back to the full mark.



Then in say 10,000 miles, drain the trannie(because now I have a MHT pan with a drain plug) and refill again... ... ... ... ..... ???

Most aftermarket (performance)torque convertors have drain plugs. I would always drill and tap my Chevy's convertors but now with the lock up convertors the risk of doing that shoots way up.

The double deep pan will take 10 quarts + depending on how long the filter is off and draining. If you want to get it all find a shop with a flush machine but do not allow them to use any chemical!!!!

Disregard my previous post. I wasn't paying attention and didn't realize we're talking about the 68 as opposed to the 48.

ATF+4 is what is called for

Barry, if your not up to doing it yourself, I would recommend just finding a trans shop, and let them install it, I did mine myself, it can be a messy job, and ATF+4 is the fluid recommended, for that trans.

Its easy to swap the entire ATF by disconnecting the transmission return line going in to the transmission from the cooler, connect a hose run it into a 5gl bucket, drain old trans fluid from pan, refill pan with new fluid at the fill tube, start truck in "N" (Need a friend to help) while pouring new ATF in filler tube, watch the bucket ATF til ya see new clean ATF, shut the engine off, reconnect everything, recheck fluid levels per OEM specs... you can do a search on this to get more information... I have done this several times by myself but, it's easier with a friend... .

I remembered my old adage that I need to do what I do best and let other folks do what they do best.
Therefore, my bride reminded me of that nice little trannie shop just down the road, that replaced the rear seal in our G56, would probably do that trannie pan swap and service for me... ... ... ... ... ... Yes Sir, we will do that for $80. When would you like to have it done?

Disclaimer: I am not trying to start an argument. Just stating personal opinion.



Every time I service a transmission with Amsoil, I am reminded of why I do it. Shifts are so smooth under normal acceleration all you hear is just the sound of engine changing pitch.
