IMHO the Mag Hytec wins in the stretch... . Magnetic dipstick and drain plug is nice, and some question how long Magview's viewer will retain it's 'clear view'.

I chose Mag Hytec and it is doing a good job so far.....

... also, although both have internal magnets to pick up the metallic 'chad', the Hytech's magnet is the dipstick, which can be removed, wiped clean and put back in!

The Mag-Hytec look like much better quality. The inside of the other one looks like someone took a dremel grinding tool to it to make it look better and it only buggered it up. In the Mag-Hytec cover all the oil flows by the magnets (one in the dipstick and one in the drain plug) In the other one a very small amount even gets by the small hole in the casting to even get to the magnet. The other one does not have any cooling fins to reduce temps even farther than just aluminum. The Mag-Hytec ha MS threads and will not damage the aluminum. I'm not sure but I thint the other one had pipe threads that will spread the aluminum and/or crack it over time. I have heard of some guys that bought one of the other ones that had a problem with the drain plug. They tightened it so it would quit leaking, but it went in so far that the drain plug hit the gear and damaged it. They had to have the gear set replaced. This is not a problem with the Mag-Hytec cover. The Mag-Hytec product is designed very well and is the best on the market.

Sincerely, Kevin

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin, Kevin:
I read you threads for quite some time now, always respected your opinion and always thought you were a very intelligent person but with your comment on the Mag View differential cover, my thoughts are changing rapidly. You said that some guys that bought the "other ones", I'm assuming you meant the Magview differential cover, and here is another quote that you said, "they tightened it to it would quite leaking, but it went in so far that the drain plug hit the gear and damaged it". Now listen to what you just said Kevin, I'll try to explain. The drain plug is what? 1/2" long maximum, let's say 3/4" for the sake of argument and they tightened the drain plug as tight as it would go, now do you really think something that is that short is going to extend upwards of about 3 to 4 inches and rub on the ring gear. Just sit back and visualize this Kevin, if you had a Magview differential cover to look at, you would obviously know, but it is obvious that you don't. These two guys probably lived in Florida and couldn't figure out the voting ballots either, but that's another story. Then you say, the Mag-Hytec product is designed very well and is the best on the market, again, it is obvious, you don't have a Magview cover in front of you. So I am assuming that that comment is opinion only. Granted, Mag-Hytec is an outstanding product and so is the MagView. That is why there is competition. People have a choice. Oh, by the way, this is my opinion only. So Kevin, please get your facts straight because the whole world is reading. My facts are straight. I know. I have two of the products in question. As Nick Foley would say, "Have a nice day!"

See my previous "lectures" on this one.

Mag-Hytec, period. No need to waste any time or money even considering anything else.

Although I have a Mag-Hytec, and love it, I know Markcuda does not buy junk for his truck! If anyone has seen his truck, you will understand! I truly believe people will choose for looks only, as they are both high quality.
If anyone is having a leak problem, I would suggest some thread sealer over putting a cheater pipe on anything! A little common sense goes a long way!
If there is a problem, Cuda would be crying by now.
I do think the fins will cool more on the Hytec. Everyone who is running a straight 90w should consider that. In fact, I would go as far to say, If you are running a straight 90w, the Mag-Hytec is a must have for long differential life.

Magview had problems with their product in the past... that's why it was pulled off the market. Redesign? Irrespective, the "view" part of the system looks like a potental for catastrophic damage. Besides, the ONLY way you can accurately check the gear oil level with the Magview is when the truck is sitting dead level, front to back and side to side.

To sum it up, If I purchased a new Ram and was offered a Magview for free, I'd still purchase the Mag-Hytec product instead. Just my opinion.

Markcuda,
I'm glad that the whole world is watching. The gear that was damaged was the sprocket that is bolted to the ring gear and regulates the anti-lock brakes. This was because the drain plug hole was drilled to deep (pipe threads)and when the drain plug is screwed in it hit the sprocket. The man that this happened to will post the exact events when he gets back from vacation.

Sincerely, Kevin

I have not been around the Magview cover, but I have been around the Mag-Hytec covers. They are very high quality units. The Magview may be just as good, but I can tell you this. Avter having my Mag-Hytec diff. cover on for 60,000 plus miles and using the Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90, the temperature of the gear case has never been over 160 F. And this was in 100 Deg F. weather, with Gross Vehicle Weight of 16,000 lbs.
I just had the gear lube analyzed, and the report came back stating; "Results of test performed indicate no corrective action required, oil is suitable for continued use. Resample at next regular interval. " The color of the lubricant was still a nice shade of blue, almost like it was straight from the bottle.
