I have read much about the Mag-Hytec differential cover in the TDR & Roundtable forums. Has anyone installed a "Magview" diff cover on a Dana 70 or an 80?

I like the idea of visually being able to check the rear end lube level. This cover also has a gussetted reinforcement (ribs) around the flange area that might have some strength advantages.

I don't know if this cover offers the same adjusted oil level filler location that the Mag-Hytec cover does for the advertised prolonged wheel bearing life. I have also heard rumors of the Mag-Hytec's leaking around the o-ring seal. Can anyone verify this condition.

The cost of this cover is $249. 00 retail. It looks like a well thought out cover w/ increased oil capacity & magnetic filtration system. It also comes in stylish colors!

Thanks! Keeno

The instructions that came with my Mag-Hytec cover made mention that if the case has numbers hand stamped into the mating face, you should use a small amount of silicon sealer to fill the indentations caused by the number stamping process. So far it has worked O-Kay for me. . (just M2CW). .

KEENO, I have the "old" MAGNAGUARD rear diff cover on a Dana 80. This is the same cover as the "Magview". I believe the company changed hands some time ago. Very pleased with it. Its about 3 years old. I bought mine in polished aluminum. (polished alum looks great!) They did not really recommend it because the unprotected aluminum will tarnish very quick. I sprayed mine with 5 coats of Krylon clear. Holding up ok. They don`t even offer polished anymore.

The window "clouds" up quick. Can`t really see the gear lube level. No sealing problems or leaks at all.
The bolts that came with the cover were regular steel. I upgraded them to stainless steel awhile ago. They rusted quick.

I don`t know much about the Mag-Hytec covers.

I bought mine 3 years ago. They have probably made improvement to it since then. #ad

Have the Mag-Hytec and I didnt fill the #'s on the diff. They didnt really come close to the "o"ring. About 7500 miles on mine and no problems - not even using the "spacers" and I was over wt by 80# when i started the trip to Tulsa mtg. Sway bar never touched the cover but I had to make an adapter to get the spare away from the cover. Do a search for this, was in dec/jan postings, if this is a problem (it is on the y2k's and up). Mag-Hytec was doing a "redesign" due to this and the spacer problem. May have the new covers out by now. Went this route because I didnt want a vial that could get broke if i backed up aganst a "rock" that jumps out at things like that.

Just my 0. 02$ worth (which dont mean much!)

The Mag Hytec is very thick and seems quite strong. I go 4 wheeling and would hate to back up on a trail and break the sight glass on the other cover! Since diff lube doesn't go anywhere without a visible leak, I feel the dipstick on the Mag Hytec is fine. It also has a small magnet to scavenge the oil for metal powder. (Big magnet in bottom on the drain plug).
I went the other way on bolts. I shelved the stainless and went for super strong Grade 9 Allens, tapped the holes with a bottoming tap so I could use longer ones (1. 25" if I recall). I used the stock stainless washers under them. 'Course we don't have must rusting problem here in the desert.

I think I posted about my adapter to move the oversized 255-85-16 spare away from the Mag Hytec cover. It is a piece of 1/4" thick plate about 2" wide with stubs from two bolts welded onto it. They fit into wheel holes #1 and 4, and a gap remains next to #2,3. I run the stock winch line and retainer through this gap, offbalancing the wheel to one side, so the long side ends up to the rear. Instead of the windh line and retainer being centered in the wheel center hole, it is thus offset to one edge of that hole.

If you try the other cover, tell us about it. It costs more than the Mag Hytec, BTW. You might try to assess whether they are a good company to do business with. I don't know them. Roy Rothlisberger (Mag Hytec) has an excellent, well-deserved reputation.

Hope this helps; more questions than answers, I'm afraid.
Joe

I would be concerned about possible damage to the sight window or even leakage at the sight glass/aluminum cover interface. The only way you can get an accurate reading using the sight glass is when the truck is parked on level ground. I'll stick with my Mag-Hytec differential cover! Thanks Roy!

Thanks TDR gang!

Yesterday when I came home from work I had received my Mag-Hytec rear differential cover form Geno's Garage. It looks to be well engineered and more heavy-duty than I had expected. Can't wait to install it this weekend when I replace both rear axle seals for the second time with the update CR seals. I hope this fixes my axle leaks.

Thanks! Keeno
