I've been thinking about that one also. I think the Mag Hytec is "nice" looking, and should be functional. The MagView though seems to me to just be a "gimick" mabey I am missing something, but how often do you loose oil in the rear end? Do you really need to look and see how much oil you have? I just don't know.

I would vote for MagHytec because of the magnetic dip stick. When I check mine after several K miles there is always a glob of powdered metal on the stick. It is designed to attract the wear metal. Wipe it off and you
remove the metal from your lube system. Makes
sense to me. The site gauge does not do it.

What Royal said... Love having the magnetic dip stick. 1) For checking oil level and color. 2) Because it pulls the metal out of the lube.

Also I believe that the magview although a little cheaper does not have an o-ring gasket. I really like that o-ring gasket idea, why not put one on the transmission pan?
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think my Hytec is worth the money. The magnet drain plug, magnet dipstick, higher oil level, temp sender hole, top quality materials and workmanship throughout are well worth the price. I too have removed a few steel hair balls from the dipstick since installation. Works great.

OK, I know I said I'd leave it alone but I guess I'm just a snivler. Waaa, waaa! I very much dislike the Oring gasket. I complained about it leaking on a previous thread and evryone yelled at me #ad
so I took the cover off, and cleaned the mating surface again, still leaked, took it off again. Put a good gasket on it ($7. 00), no promlems now. It irks me to have taken extra time, effort and money(purchase cost increase to cover manufacturing)for zero gain. It doesn't do a single thing more (not as good in my case)than a stock gasket. It's like having a really expensive gold plated custom machined hammer to break rocks with. An ugly cheap one does the exact same job just as good.

Course I guess this is the USA where we drive $50'000+ cars, wear Rolex watches and brag about how much we over spent on our latest "need" while the rest of the world watches in bewilderment.

OK let the food throwing begin, thanks for listening #ad

LarryB, did you fill the "stamped" letters on the housing? Sorry if you have already been asked this, but I almost didn't because that recommendation was on a seperate piece of paper. I just installed one today, but didn't have the time allowed to let some JB Weld set up in the stamps, I just used RTV silicone, no leaks, yet.

Put on the Mag-Hytek, plug the letter marks, torque the bolts, fill with Amsoil gear lube, and drive, drive, drive
P. S. Clean all goo off the face first.
Good luck.

I am happy with the Mag Hytec. I have used one for several year and have put them on others' Rams and everyone has been satisfied. Being cautious and unlucky, I put silicone RTV on the cover in addition to the o-ring. Roy shook his head when I told him that, but I have not had any leaks. Last time I took it off, I left the o ring off and just used RTV. I like the 1/2" thick cover for strength too, and wonder what would happen if I backed into a rock while 4 wheeling and hit a cover with a sight glass on the glass part. I have not seen the Magview close up so can't comment on it directly.

I installed the Mag Hy-tec on my '01 3500
4x4 over 3 weeks ago. I followed the
directions and precautionary measures in
the directions pertaining to the sealing
surfaces and number/letter stampings. I
used a file on them to get rid of the high
spots and black RTV only in the areas that
have been stamped. So far everything is
bone dry!

I bought my truck used and the previous owner did use rtv on the diff cover. When I replaced it with the mag-hytek I scraped off the rtv but left the dried rtv in the stampings. 6 months later not a leak.
Mag-hytek one good product, and if anyone is in the so-cal area I would strongly suggest you buy them straight from Mag-hytek. The advise I got from the crew at maghytek was worth the price of the diff cover.

bubba... I have not installed a Mag-Hytec but most rears have ID numbers on them under diff covers... so I assume if you dont file and fill up the letters and numbers which are stamped into the sealing surface, it would leak...

Thats because the rear cover sealing surface is designed as a non precision mating surface and to use a stock gasket, even with scratches, stampings and some dirt. If you want to use a precision o-ring seal you may have to spend the extra time to make it a better surface. The Hytec cover is definitely a precision piece.

If the Mag-View doesn't have a magnet where does it get it's name? The Mag-Hytec looks like a very well made unit to me but I'm cheap. I just stick a powerful $1 magnet to the outside of my AT pan and differential covers. Every time I've removed the covers for servicing the area where the magnet's located is covered with shavings. Once found a 1/4"diameter x 1" long pin stuck to my daughter's Accord AT pan. Honda assured me that it didn't come from the transmission, and every thing works fine???
