Hope this is the correct forum for this question to all your Mag-hytech owners out there. I installed my new Mag-Hytech diff. cover last night and found that I have a small problem. MY Dodge is a 2001. 5 ETH DEE 4 X 2 long wide box Quad cab with most of the bells and whistles available.

After installing the Mag-Hytech, and filling with the Amsoil series 2000 75w140, I put the factory spare back in place and found that the tire will rub on top of the new diff. cover. The tires are the factory Michelin A/S LXT 265/75R16.

Carrying the spare in the bed is not an option. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you solve it.

The only answer I have come up with is to put a smaller tire on the spare wheel such as a 245/75R16, and use it very sparingly (pun intended).

I tightened the spare almost tight then put a ratchet strap around the hitch to pull the spare back to the rear away from the cover. After this I snugged the spare to the frame as normal. No problems thus far. I have lots of room and my spare is a 265-75R16 also.

Thanks for the reply, tunnel vision, I guess, as that idea never occurred to me. Will give it a try.

Try this..

Lee, I ran into the same problem, here is what I did, I hope I can 'splain it clearly. I took the bracket(at the end of the cable) and drilled a hole for a 3/8 bolt, center of bracket, left to right, 1/8" from the lip at each end of the bracket. I installed two 3/8"x2" bolts pointing up and double nutted them. You still raise the spare as before with the cable and bracket through the hub hole in the wheel. Instead of the bracket being centered in the hub hole, you stick the two bolts up through any two of the wheel stud holes, this will pick up the wheel slightly off center. Raise the spare up until it just hits the frame, slide under and rotate the spare until the short side(?) of the spare is by the diff and the long side is at the back, then crank it tight. You should have plenty of clearance(1"-2") I did this a couple of months ago and seems to work fine.

Thanks for the reply. Your suggestion was clear and sounds like a good solid fix for my problem. Will try it if the strap/rachet looks like it is showing wear and tear.

I do like the idea of the strap as it does provide a back-up to the factory cable assy. Hate to think of what would happen in cable decided to fail while traveling down the road. Major problem to my pickup, then the 5er hooked on behind and the traffic behind the 5er. Not a pretty picture.

Had a 12" long 2X6 wheel block fly out of the back of the pickup once while traveling down I-84 . It hit the pavement, bounced, punched a hole in the RV black water tank (thankfully it was empty) and stuck in the fresh water tank (which was full). Can you imagine what a spare tire and wheel would do?
