I talked with Roy today at Mag Hytec. AS follow up to our conversation at the Tulare meet in October, he is almost finished with the Dana 60 front differential cover. I "begged" him to put an angled ramp on the bottom half instead of a lip, so if I hit a rock in the trail, the differential will tend to ride up and over it instead of smashing the cover into the gears. Although this change adds cost, it will make the cover very functional. Right now I have an ugly steel "skidplate" that I made covering the bottom 5 bolts of the stock front cover. I couldn't get the best angle on it , and it is a real hassle to remove and replace the cover, but it gives some protection.
I became a believer when I hit a major rock, mostly underground and hidden in a bush, in a dry wash while hunting about 9 years ago. My crewcab 440 gasser just stalled (I was going about 4 mph) and mashed the 3/16" thick skid plate I had on that truck into the front cover without hurting the cover or diff. That episode proved to me the value of front diff protection.
Now finally we will have a commercially available cover that looks great, matches the rear differential cover, and is VERY functional, giving ESSENTIAL protection for our 4x4 front differentials.
Roy hopes to have a few covers made up in time for the Dec. 15 meet in Pahrump. I have already gotten in line for one. This is an accessory that I will be strongly recommending to all 4x4 owners!
