Magnaflow Performance Exhaust

Hi to all. I am new to this and this is my first post. Bear w/me. I recently was at a Sportmans Show in Denver and talked to some people about putting a Magnaflow Preformance Exhaust system on my Ram. My question is, has anyone put this system on their truck? Will I have a problem passing an emmissions test? There is a small muffler just forward of the big muffler, (possibly a catalytic converter) I don't know. I just don't want to remove the factory stuff and then fail the visual inspection at emmission time. Need input. Thanks. Steve

The Magnaflow $tainless $teel exhaust system is one awesome exhaust! This is a great exhaust system however, if you don't feel like spending over a grand for an exhaust system for your Ram check out the the 4" diameter, mandrel bent, aluminized steel exhaust systems available from fellow TDR member Rip Rook ("rrook" on the TDR BB). The smaller "muffler" ahead of your OE muffler is a resonator, NOT a catalytic converter.

John, does the resonator have any thing to do with emmissions? We who live on the Eastern slope of the Front Range have to comply with emmission laws. Steve

The resonator is just a straight through muffler, nothing else... it resonates sound waves (or so the theory goes).

I just send you a PM. To answer your question on the exhaust..... the exhaust system really doesn't have much of anything to do with Emission testing. Mainly when your truck is put on the dyno for testing, they are measuring the smoke level in what they call Opacity. I can direct you to a an awesome emission shop here in Denver if you need help.



I just passed with 10% opacity!!!!



Don't sweat the test, I'll give you the info that you need to pass!!!

What is the name of the Emissions shop. I have went to Diesel test Center on Havana here in Aurora the past two times since it's close and convient. I just don't like the fact they will not let you see what they do. When I was in on January I asked the guy how the results where and all he said was I passed, but it was running a little rich. Wish I could compare this to last years results. Has me worried if I have a leaky injector, or could be as simple a air filter getting a little dirty and restrictive. Last year the guy who ran the test could not believe how "clean" my emissions where. He said I was actually lower than what he normally sees on the new 24V trucks.



The place I have been going does do a visual inspection for the cat. This put a damper on my "test-pipe" install, so now I have a test-pipe collecting dust instead of soot I could get the flat band type clamps and swith the cat in and out, but my emissions testing is due in January and I don't relish the thought of doing this swap in the snow and freezing weather. Plus I have yet to be able and get the dang crimpped exhaust joints apart I need a torch, but no exhaust shops or auto/truck repairs shop in Denver will help (go figure). I tried every angle to have someone heat the joints and separate them, but knowone here in Denver will touch a cat unless it's to replace it. I even had on exhaust shop owner ask me to leave becasue he did not want to get fined and loose his buisness over it. I told him all I wanted was the cat removed then he could put it back it, just not to torque the clamps down til the pipe was crimpped again. He said he knew my intent and would not help or have any part of it and asked me to leave!!

The name of the shop is Colorado Diesel Emissions. (located in Castlerock)



As far as the CAT goes, they do have to do an inspection for it. This shop still has to obey the Colorado Emission laws, but they are very helpful in telling you what you need to do and are always willing to go the extra mile to help out.



As far as your CAT situation... Sounds like another excuse to get the RMTDR together for some BOMBing.



We can get a bunch of guys together, remove that CAT, gut it out, put a piece of straight pipe through it... weld it together. . and whoola. ha ha ha... I know a couple of guys that have done that.

Guys,

I checked with a diesel emmisions shop @ Santa Fe and Broadway about the laws. I was told that if your truck had a cat from the factory, then it needs one. If not, it doesn't.

When I asked about a muffler or resonator she said it doesn't matter for the diesel.

I don't think that the 2001 has a cat. You may not need to worry about anything other than what do you want to buy.

Actually the 24v's don't have cats at all. Only 12v's... . so we have an open playing field to upgrade that stock exhaust system.

That is a good one about gutting out the cat. I've heard of people doing this, but I don't anyone on this board would do this and risk a big fine by the EPA.

Yes it is a huge fine if you get caught, which is why I don't suggest it. I figure it was put there for a reason... but hey, a man's gotta do what a mans gotta do right?? LOL
