Magnet for oil filter

At the beginning of the year there was a thread on adding a magnet to the oil filter. I had been using one on my hot rod made by FilterMag for the past three years. This company made these for commercial use and started making them for speciality uses about that time. I called the owner to ask if 1) would it affect our computers (no), and 2) if they had an application for Cummin's. It turned out that the one for my gasser wasn't strong enough and they were developing one for diesel use on light trucks. I talked to the owner and there will be a magnet for our trucks available at the end of July. These are not your mothers refer magnets that hold notes. Heres the info on them:
-they have 525 lbs of magnet draw
-it catches 99. 97% of less than 0 microns of metal particles
-it weighs 2. 5 lbs
-made of stainless steel
-250 units will be available at the end of July (the PSD guys know about this also
-these units will not be available to any dealers until next year
I got the owner to give TDR members a 10% discount. These units are not cheap. They cost $149 each. With the 10% discount it will be $134 each. I asked about group purchase, but he will not make them available to dealers until the end of this year. He will eat the cost of shipping for 5 units or more. If five guys in a local want to go togeather and agree that one of them is a drop point, he will eat the shipping cost. He also agreed that each of the 5 could use their own credit card and just let him know they are part of XX address purchase. That way one person would not have to collect or lay out all the money.
I'm sorry for the lenght of this. I guess I like to know if anyone is interested? And I would like to know if there are 5 members in my area that would be interested. I am going to buy on of these no matter what. I have cut the oil filter open on my hot rod after breakin and was amazed at the amount caught. At oil drains there isn't any metal on the drain plug magnet. These things work. Let me know what you all think. The owner doesn' want to take orders just yet but will let me know when we can proceed and I will post it on the site.

Thats a serious amount of money for a magnet. You can just get some have duty magnets at the hardware store and stick them on your filter and they will do the same thing. With a bypass system, they are almost worthless. Tell the guy to make the price a little more realistic.

These magnets offer no benefit to your engine or to oil longevity. Normal iron containing wear particles are less than 1 micron in diameter and are thus too small to contribute significantly to engine wear. The condemnation limit for iron in a Cummins is usually considered to be 100 ppm. This would typically take >25,000 miles to reach in a good running engine. Using a magnet will prevent using oil analysis to monitor engine wear without any real benefit. IMHO, they are just a gimmick.

Where is Illflem when you need him. He posted about going to a magnetic sign company and procuring some of their flexible magnets to stick to the out side of the filter and switch them over to the new filter at changes.

My Billy the Big Mouth Bass works better. Someone posted a link way back where one of the universities did studies on many magnetic gimmicks such as for increased mpgs when on fuel lines, treating hard water, oil filters etc. The results, save your money. As for the sign strips, they were free.

Don't Do It

Robert of the original diesel website tested magnets and the test was a short one... . the engine vibration resulted iin a hole being rubbed into the side of the filter from the magnet's friction.



We can debate whether the magnets help but one thing is undebatable -- the engine won't run without oil. Friction on the filter = rubbing = hole = no oil No oil = bad; therefore magnet = bad. I can't imagine a way to eliminate friction from something strapped, taped, or tied to the filter.



But... I hear they improve fuel mileage 20% and increase the lifespan of those in the vehicle at the same time.
