magnet on the filter

I had to post even without the info, But I will find it tonight and post. I am also a hot boat fan, and subscribe to Hot Boat Magazine there was an add advertizing a magnet that atatches to the filter, actually a round band that slips on the filter. the add showed a filter that had been cut WOW tha magnet worked!! I called and I recall they had an application for autos , diesels ect. A little pricey though I think $100. I finds the info and post.

Yeah. I cut the filter on my Cessna apart every time the oil gets changed, and there is always some residue around the magnets. Whether the particles are big enough to do damage could be argued, but the fact remains that the magnets do pull ferous metal out of the oil.

I almost went for this it seems to work by the oil test that they published ect. I was told $70. 00 for truck and $149. 00 for boat / heavy duty applications who knows?????

I just installed a wrap around filter magnet from these guys http://www.thebeartrap.com/domestic.htm today, half the price you mention. This sucker is strong, it would probably lift 20 pounds. What they say happens is that particles smaller than your oil filter micron rating passing though it will enlarge the media allowing the filter to pass larger particles. That's when the damage comes. Makes perfect sense to me, interesting to see how it does.

I don't know about the quality but www.jcwhitney.com sells a band that wraps around the oil filter with magnets in it for under $20. 00. I use this plus a magnetic heater on the drain plug area. I figure the heater will catch and stick the metal particals to the bottom of the oil pan and then when I remove the heater along with the oil drain plug for an oil change the metal particals will come out with the oil change. Thats my method.

I use the JC Whitney version on my airplane

I got the JC Whitney model on sale long ago for about $10. It does work nice for seeing what kind of ferrous metal you are making if you cut the filter open... I think most of the metal would get trapped in the filtering media anyway, but it is nice to see what is happening when you cut the filter open.
