I have been buying it by the bottle but would like to know why you need a magnet in case down the road I need to buy at the pump.

Just a wild guess, but looks like maybe the DEF fill tube diameter is the same as the main fuel tank, and sometimes the uninformed try to fill the DEF tank with diesel fuel - guess the magnet bit is used to decease the DEF filler diameter so no tries to get a standard diesel nozzle in the DEF filler...

Mine are about 5 foot apart!!!

The DEF fill tube is smaller than the main fuel tank. OPW calls the magnet a DEF Misfuel Prevention Device or DEF MFPD. Some DEF nozzle's need the magnet to make it work. It is supposed to stop you from putting DEF in your main fuel tank which would be a costly mistake.

AH, just what I need, more acronyms... :)

Figured it was some sort of mis-fueling device - but not had direct exposure the later model trucks and their unique EPA garbage - just one of the reasons I got one of the last of the 2nd generation trucks...

Gotta keep things simple for us older coots...

Nope the fill holes are different sizes and colors but way too close together for my liking

It does seem odd that the auto makers, and fueling stations didn't get together on a fill station setup that was fully compatible with all related vehicles...

Have already seen one person who put bulk DEF into his diesel. Very costly mistake - and what blows my mind is that he didn't think about it until he came into the station to pay for 15 gallons on his Ram 3500. I was standing in another line waiting to pay for gasoline (which went into my gas burning Jeep) when I heard him tell the cashier the amount. Several of us immediately went 'Oh S%^t'. What is especially bad is he pulled his truck forward to clear the area for other trucks.

There used to be a Phillips 66 station here in town that required it - they had one in the office. Store changed brands and no longer handles bulk DEF. Other than that I have not seen any -- however I only get my DEF at my auto dealer -- one less thing for them to try to nail me on if I get a 'contaminated DEF' error code.

Not sure just how it works as I've never had to use one but it 'opens' the nozzle so that the DEF can flow through it. I've heard of several who have had to use theirs but as I mentioned, I've been fortunate enough to have not hit one of those stations. Without it you can not pump bulk DEF at one of those locations. ???

The reason for buying at truck stops is 1 it is fresh they go thru a lot of it and 2 it is about half the cost. if you don't tow it is no big deal . If you do it can be a big money saver, since you go thru at least double when towing heavy.

90 % of the time I am towing a 10K travel trailer. Been averaging about 800 mpg of def. At what point does towing heavy start? Just curious.

That is about what I get when towing - 13K gross but probably in the high 11s without water and packed lightly. Tall 5th wheel recreation vehicle. If I fill it I get about 1200 miles before the guage reads under 1/2. I can then put 2.5 gallons in. That said, I tend to use a lot more if I'm lugging the engine at all or doing a lot of stop and go driving. If I remember my reading correctly the NOX output from the engine is dependent on the fuel / speed -- when accelerating from a stop, or pulling heavy it used more DEF.
