Picked this summers camping destination the old tried & true way. . the dart hit the map right on the coast of Maine.

If anyone has any info, do's, donts, musts & must nots... please chime in. Thanks-

Your dart has great taste. My wife and I have been going to Maine for years. Depends on what you're into. The southern coast of Maine is really touristy and crowded, as you'd imagine any vacation spot is. The further north you go, the less crowded it gets. But if you like the beach and all that, then by all means give it a try. The Lake Sebago area is a bit further up and is also nice. It fills up fast, too. If you're into hiking and more remote wilderness areas try norther Maine near Baxter State Park. We've been going up there for about 8 years now. The town of Millinockett is at the southern entrance to the park and the Northern entrance is near the town of Mt. Chase. Should you chose you can spend quite some time climbing the peaks in Baxter State Park. There are many, but Mt. Katahdin is the most famous and the tallest in Maine at 5267ft. It's a beautiful area but way up there. Tons of stuff to do in Maine.

If you like 'Tourists' The coast,
A Stop at Kittery Trading post is interesting,
" Beans " is a traffic nightmare... as is the Coast Highway
in summer.

If you like ' Nothing' North and West Maine ( Inland )
But, Last Fall the Roads in Northern Maine were terrible...
Doubt they will be any better, The State is ' Broke''

Touristy & crowded-certainly not our thing.

We are looking for clean, quite, beachfront camping. Lobster boat racing would be an extra, my search shows different places & times-which only leaves me more confused.

A "Broke" state Huh? I'll feel like I never left Jersey.

Don't forget Cadillac Mountain. It's the first place in the country you can see the sunrise. It's in Acadia National Park. I'll never forget when I was a kid camping up there with Mom and Dad. We laid out in a field and watched a meteor shower. It was raining stars and the sky was perfectly clear. It's beautiful up there. Spend some time in the tide pools for me.



I went Scallop diving up there in November with my cousins one year we were in high school. We were the only fools on the boat with wetsuits. Everyone else had warm cozy drysuits. Our lips were blue, but we had scallops as big around as silver dollars!



You can also take the ferry over to Nova Scotia.

I have to agree with Spooled-up about Acadia National Park. I would rate this as the one of the best places I have camped. Also Acadia is the 2nd most visited national park in the US, number 1 being Yellow Stone. I did take the ferry to Nova Scotia because the company I work for has a production plant there and I happened to meet a nice guy that works there so we went over to visit and spent the weekend. Nova Scotia was great also and had some great scollops over there. The ferry ride is a little pricey but was well worth it. I am sure no matter where you go in Maine you will enjoy it.

You can white water raft on the Penobscot too.



Might as well do part of the 5 points tour and get a pic of the truck up there at that northern Maine town (can't remember what it is right now).

Ditto on Acadia. Was there for a day trip to climb the mountain. What a great place.
