Question: How do you overfill the Getrag... do you use the top of bolt of the PTO cover to fill it? How much total w/ overfill? It was about a quart low and was going to change out w/ Mobile 1 5W-30. Broke a 3/8" ratchet w/ cheater bar and still couldn't get drain plug out. I have ann impact gun w/ 1/2 to 3/8" that I'm gonna try next. How much fill/what type fluid for xfer case?

I started doing maint this past weekend: replaced orig shocks w/ Monroe Gas Magnum LT... way better ride. Changed the rearend coal block dif oil too. I pulled flooring up... AC drain was clogged and it had been wet under there for a while. No rust through just got to wire bruch and put good heavy coat of primer before putting it back. Sanded surface rust off the roof and shot it w/ Duplicolor rattle can paint. Perfect match and saves it for when I can do total body and paint later. I had a flow thru 3" muffler installed on it too. Sounds and performs better already.

A friend is going to adjust timing and fuel tomorrow so we'll see how this beast comes alive. Have to admit big dif in driving a stock 160 HP rig after running my 02 w/ nearly 400HP. You are much more selective about pulling out into traffic.

Ordered tach, boost and EGT gauges and factory manual. Should all be here next week.

Well, I got plenty to keep me busy.

Thanks, Wiredawg

yeah I was wondering about overfilling as well. by the way what was the model number of those shocks, I am needing to replace mine as well

5w30 synthetic engine oil in Getrag 5 speed. Dino 80-90W gear oil in transfer case. Yes top bolt in pto cover to overfill getrag by 1 quart, fill hole is 3. 5 qts. I run 5 qts. Or you can remove the shifter lever and fill through top, big pain to get the shifter back in though.

Those Taiwan one twist tools should only be used for loaners:-laf.

Shock #s and Thanks for fill info

CChartier:

The Monroe shocks are great and nearly half price at Advance Auto Parts: Fronts: 59550; Rears: 59522 All $21. 48 each. You never hear folks talk much about anything other than Rancho and Bilstien on the TDR. These shocks went over 100K miles on a Toyota 4WD and got free replcement and put another 70K on them. I got to warn you they are firm, but are propbably the best shock for the money on the market.

BGilbert: Thanks for the info: Will tackle replcing transmission and transfer case refill Thursday.

Y'all have a great day today and a better one tomorrow!

The easiest and cleanest way I have found to overfill the transmission is to remove the shifter boot and shift lever, and pour the oil directly into the shift tower. The hard part is getting the shift lever retainer locked in place again, but in true firstgen spirit, I am sure you can handle it!

My believe my shop manual says 30W motor oil for the t-case and thats what it has in it. I as recall, you pull the PTO plate and fill until the fluid level reaches the upper plug on the back. Easy job.
