Going over the paperwork for my new truck, one of the things they give you is a maintenance record. This record states clearly that failure to perform the required maintenance will void the warranty. There are coupons at each mileage interval which must be filled out either by the servicing dealer or by a qualified technician. They claim that if you do the maintenance yourself, you must provide receipts indicating that the required maintenance was performed.

This seems simple enough with oil/filter changes, but what about things like "Inspect exhaust system". There is no "receipt" for such an item.

What are others doing about self-performed maintenance? Were you able to work something out with a dealer service dept. where you can do your own oil changes and still satisfy the records requirements?

I keep a written record of each item that I complete as well as any pertinent receipts in a file. I sign each record in the maintenance book with a check mark or comment next to each item.

I just keep a log of maintenance performed and save all receipts for oil, filters and any other parts I may need. Like Casey, I just check it off my self. Main thing is to keep a record and reciepts.

inspecting the exhaust system is a breeze. go under when running and listen/look for leaks. no leaks, all ok. lubricate door latches, just shoot some thickening white lithium grease on the components [and maybe some silicon spray on the rubber door seals] and that is pretty much the stuff that gets done other than the engine maintenence and tire pressure checks.

I would think that your yearly state inspections would qualify for the exhaust since they cover that in the inspection.

I plan to take the exhaust system completely apart on mine for a thorough inspection. (Sure hope I don't forget to put the muffler back on!!!!)

I put each service in my fuel log with the date, mileage, and service performed. I also keep my receipts for what it is worth, the ink usually fades within a year:( .

If they say that isn't enough, they will be 'splaining it to a lawyer.

You only need receipts for things that are required maintenance. Example oil and filter change, I would show the date and mileage of the service on the receipt and keep it in your truck file. You will then be covered. My Dealer does an excellent job and I will let them do their thing as long as that continues. Then there is no confusion when you have the receipt from the Dealer, plus when/if something goes wrong they know you are a solid customer and will normally bend over backward to take care of you. That has been my experience :)

I just had my first service done by my dealer and I am of the same mind as Pit Bull. They did a great job and at a reasonable price. I am fortunate to have a great service department at my dealers.

KEEP RECEIPTS>They will never ask for that little book. To many folks filled it out them selves and work not done. They don't care about exhaust inspections etc. Its the fluids and seals checked etc. . If you do your own oil service keep the printed receipt and write in the mileage. USE good common sense.
