Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Major NV4500 problems

On a recent long trip I heard a loud sqealing noise come from my trans that stopped just as sudden as it started but after the noise it was very difficult to shift. I was about 1000 miles from home with a loaded car trailer behind the truck and I figured the damage was done so I continued home.

I pulled the trans last night and here is what I found.

The remainder of the first gear bearing.

Damage to reverse and 1st gear journals on mainshaft.

Reverse gear is also shot.

I really don't have the money to fix this thing right now so it looks like I'm without a truck for awhile #@$%!

Anyone have any suggestions on where to buy the parts I need for this?

I need first and reverse gears, mainshaft and all bearings at a minimum.

Who has the best mainshaft setup for the 5th gear fix these days?

I would give Dan a call. I used his 5th gear fix and he was great to work with. He will have all the parts, tools and instructions you need to get going again.

I just bought a brand new NV4500 on Ebay but I think I will rebuild my old trans also so I have a spare.

Now I need to decide on what clutch to use, FE or OFE.

FE will be very sticky compared to OFE. For your current mods an OFE is more than sufficient.

I have had both the OFE and the FE... . there is not much difference, more mind over matter than anything else... I would definitely go with the FE, and leave room for upgrades, just in case. if cost is an issue, you may want to look into a NV5600 swap/conversion, rather than have your 4500 rebuilt. I went that route, and got a 6 speed from Blumenthals... love it, but the 2nd gear synchronizer has never worked from the time I got it out of the crate, now reverse doesn't have any either... . other than that, its been a great transmission and bolts up with no mods needed! well good luck and hope everything works out!
